Kids a young a 14 given life sentences in adult jail?

I think it's sick 14/15/16 year olds are not adults and they can't reason like them. Imagen being locked up for your whole life when you are just 14/15. I think they are kids and should be treated like it. If they are not hardened criminals when they go in they will be soon. What do you think about this?

Well, I think that children that are old enough to work at a grocery store as a bagger, are old enough to be accountable for their actions. Just this week, a man that had been arrested at the age of 18 for a horrible crime (he and a 14-year-old kidnapped a woman, and her two children, raped the women, shot her four times, and killed her daughters with a close range shot to the head) was given a lethal injection, but the once 14-year-old is only serving a life sentence in jail, although he did everything his 18-year-old friend did.

If they are sent to prison with LIFE sentences then YES they ARE hardened criminals and need to be treated as such. Maybe they don't reason the same as an adult but they DO know right from wrong.

Looking for the REAL answer!
I think if you stab someone 40 times then you deserve to go to jail no mater how old you are...
If it is a violant crime, Yes teenagers deserve adult sentances..
However, if it's more accidential (wrestling, or accomplise in a beating, etc) then I think they should lighten up a bit
When I was 14 I knew perfactly well, that I didn't want to intentionally hurt anyone else

Did they knowingly kill a person? Then I feel they should get the sentence. I mean, people think that just because they're not 18 then they shouldn't be tried as an adult. Your reasoning and thinking doesn't suddenly change when you hit 18 - age is just a number. If a person takes another human life, whether they be 14 or 40, then they should get imprisoned.

Kids locked up like that generally ARE hardened criminals. They have to push pretty far and really abuse the system, or do something pretty outrageous, to be considered an adult in court. Or are you volunteering to personally house and try to rehabilitate a kid who's been arrested for drug possession, dealing, 9 counts of theft on different occasions (and been let go with slaps on the wrist for being a juvenile), 4 counts of assault (likewise) and finally homicide? Just because he's 15? Yes, teens don't have quite fully formed brains, and are awash in hormones. It doesn't mean that they are animals. But if they ARE animals, it's too late to turn them into humans; sociopaths don't magically gain empathy and believe that other people are worthwhile just because they turned a year older.

If you are sentenced to life in prison at the age of 14/15/16, then you have committed a horrendous crime like murder. You know the difference between right and wrong at this age and if you have done something that bad, then you deserve to spend your life in jail. Do you want someone walking around who is capable of doing such a thing as a teenager? I don't.

What did the person do? There's some stuff thats so awful, and that shows such a sick evil murderous personality that just for public safety its better to lock them up forever. However I do think cases like that are exceedingly rare, though it does happen sometimes. I'd require that the person have a record of more than a few truly horrible crimes before imposing a sentence like life imprisonment, however. I always wonder if some kind of brain surgery or medication might make people so far off beam behave normally, or at least harmlessly.

i agree to a point. i know that i did some really stupid crap when i was 14-17 and i of course knew what i was doing but yet as ive gotten older...i see that i was young and dumb for lack of better words. i just didnt have the common sence or whatever. but when it comes to murdering someone...idk, id have to say they should be treated as an adult. (depending on the case) but they know better there....or at least dont get a smack on the hand just cuz your a child yanno? so i guess im kinda torn...

I think that if a person commits a crime like murder at 14/15/16 should be treated like an adult and be prosecuted as one. They are old enough to realize what they are doing and what the consequences are going to be.

The U.S. locks up 25% of the ENTIRE world's population of prisoners, we incarcerate more total than China and Russia combined. This is the only industrialized country that has the death penalty and the U.S. Bureau of Statistics reports that violent crime is currently the lowest it has ever been since they started keeping records.
The prison industrial complex is a disgrace to this "free" country it is perpetrated by prison developers and arms manufacturers who make obscene profits from running citizens through the system for non crimes. The politicians shill for these corporations enacting outrageous sentencing guidelines and minimums. I am a criminal, you are a criminal, our kids are criminal not for crimes against the public but for human nature crimes and poor economics.
Crime is a symptom of a poor society not the cause. These kids have no chance before they are ever born, parents that work for $6.55 hr minus healthcare and taxes. The family unit in this country was sold out decades ago for profits and this is our result as a nation. Fix the economy and give liveable wages to EVERYONE. In Europe minimum wage averages $14.00hr and healthcare is a right as well as good schools and free college. Fix these things and we will fix the crime.

They SHOULD go to prison! Keeps us from dealing with them later and maybe saves some more lives! Bleeding hearts are the problem with this society! People have lost their power to discipline their children so they become criminals ~ once they are criminals, people fight for their "rights" in prison....THEY DON'T HAVE RIGHTS! Geeez, we spend more money to "house" criminals than what is allotted for our veterans. Stop complaining about "poor criminals" and stand up for our veterans so that you have the ability to come on here and complain!
God Bless the USA!

If they do the crime they need to do the time! What is that telling them if you let them get away with it? When you are 14/15/16 you know the difference between right and wrong.

I think 14/15/16 year old's who have committed a crime heinous enough for a life sentence in jail should go there. We're not talking about juvenile delinquents here but serious crime.
The thing is 14/15/16 year old's committing these crimes certainly seem to think they are adults and know what they're doing prior to getting caught. They revert to the 'but I'm only a kid' thing after being caught and being treated like an adult. If they commit a crime, then they need to do the time. They will not learn otherwise and continue to be nuisances to society if they are not treated as adults.

Of course I do not include teenagers participating in non-violent crime, they do have a chance to change and do something more with their life. There are other ways for them to be rehabilitated than serving time in jail.

archimedes579
Some of them should be locked be up. when you are 14 you understand that KILLING someone is permanent and therefor should spend the rest of your life in some sort program helping the society you would otherwise have tried to ruin.

I think we should create prisons just for lifetime juvenile offenders for ages 12 to 18. We could fund it with increase taxes paid by people who don't commit crimes. And we could incarcerate them with sofas, gyms, coke, cable and Xbox or PS2.

"If they aren't hardened criminals...they will be"??? Sure prison will make them more hardened so when they get out...wait what happened to life in prison?

I think it's sad that such young people could commit such heinous crimes. I think it's sad that people are allowed to give birth to children when the parents are completely incapable of taking care, raising and teaching them how to be functional members of society.

How would you feel if you son or daughter were killed by a young kid of 14?

I think the death penalty should be instituted for youth as well and I think if any one is guilty of life without parole they should be sentenced to death.

I think that parents of serious offenders should be required to pay increased taxes, +20% or more for each year their children are incarcerated.

I think all prisons should require prisoners to labor to make their food (give them wooden tools or no tools at all) and cable and weight rooms should be taken out. And those who commit major crimes who are not full citizens or who have been in the US less than 5 years should be airdropped back into their own country.

And the young kids should be put in general population and the older people who ***** them out, abuse them or harm them should be castrated and have their arms permanently broken.

In fact I think we should castrate anyone who has been incarcerated for more than 5 years before they are released back into society.

Its too bad kids have to spend life in prison, but, its necessary.

Before a law was passed to prosecute kids as adults. Kids as young as 14 were killing people just for the hell of it. Because, they knew that they would get what amounts to a slap on the wrist with the legal system. We still have young kids killing, but, its not anywhere near or as bad as it use to be.

What needs to happen now, we need to create public awareness. That just because you are a minor. If you commit a capital crime you will be treated and prosecuted as an adult.

If the child was sane and knew what they were doing when they committed the crime then they are tried as an adult. It also depends on how serious the crime is. If they committed murder or a serious threat of some sort and either intended on carrying it out or confessed to plotting the crime, they have to be tried as an adult. It's the way it is and we can't pass judgment on the people who enforce the laws we follow every day.We can only pray that we aren't stupid enough to commit the crimes they do.
