My landlord decided not to give me my ful security amount.
Nothing was damaged in the apartment but he said he took out 80 dollars for money that I owed the neighbor (whom he is friends with).
I owe the neighbor 80 for a totally seperate matter, we switched apartment and he didnt switch his electric for a month and when he finally did told me I owed him 80.
I told him id pay him back and I guess he told the landlord I hadnt done so yet and now the landlord is taking it out of my security.
I told him I refuted this and he said well I dont have to give any security back.
So, I took the check but I want to get the 80 dollars back that he illegaly took out of my security.
If I report this to the police what can they do about it?

The police won't do anything because it is a civil matter. If you want something done, then you will need to file court documents. It really would be a waste of time. If you owed the person money, be glade it is paid and done with. It is only $80 bucks! I agree that the manager is wrong for taking the $80 bucks out of the deposit without your consent but the time, money, and aggravation of dealing with the matter in court will be far worse than the loss of $80.
I'd right it off as "over and done with" and maybe request a letter stating what was done with the cash and how it changed hands and why. This will help protect you in the event that the landlord decides to sue or that the person in which you owed the money to decides to sue.
More or less, this isn't a battle I would take the time to fight. If it was $800 dollars, yes, but $80 dollars is reaching and your court fees will be 3 times that and you will more than likely loose. |

The police won't do anything. You have to get a lawyer and go to housing court. The ONLY thing a landlord can claim from your deposit is damages or cleanup fees. He can't pay neighbors who "claim" you owe them money. |
