Law question about drugs?

Okay, I'm finished reading Slash's autobiography, the lead guitarist from Rock n Roll band Guns N' Roses. It covers alot of drug using, which as its universally known, it is illegal to use drugs. But why is he, or anyone for that matter, allowed to talk about a past illegal activity? I mean, if I stab someone or break a window and admit it in a book, shouldn't, or wouldn't I be brought up for it? I remember Roy Keane, a former footballer for Manchester United being banned and fined for intentionally going out and seeking revenge on an opposing player b/c he accused him of faking an injury, deemed unsportmanly, so, if Slash admitted to doing something illegal, and admitted it in a book, why isn't he brought up about it, or anyone in that case? Why aren't people in rehab brought up?

Enlighten me?

It's a minor crime and usually handled by local cops. They'd need to go through the book, locate where and when he did each drug and the local cops would need to bring him up on charges.

His admission of drug use in a book isn't considered a confession. If that was all the evidence that the cops had, he could simply say it was an exagerattion or a lie when the book was written to increase sales.

It's near impossible for cops to arrest someone who says they once did drugs. If I admitted to killing someone once, they could investigate the victim, find evidence and convict me. What evidence of drug use are they going to find?
