Legal question about downloading windows xp disk?

I legally own a copy of Windows XP, but my disk has become far to damaged to work anymore. Would it be illegal for me to download a disk off of the internet, burn it, but use the cd key that I own. I would not distribute it, and would get rid of the disk after I reformatted my pc too.

why wouldn't it work, it would just be another disk of windows xp

If you can find a copy of the same version of XP (home /professional), you can install that on your computer and then change the key code in the activation process. It is totally legal to use another copy, as long as you are using the program with your (legal) license.

Computer repair shops do this all the time.
