Legal to force student to be needle-stuck?
|
I'm working on my RMA, Registered Medical Assistant, and I am almost finished. We are on hematology (basically the taking blood) now.
The teacher is telling me that I have no choice....let myself get stuck in the arm with a needle----meaning have my blood drawn----by my ametuer classmates.......or fail the class.
I don't want to. I will stick...but I really refuse to be stuck but ametuer(pardon my spelling) students.
To me that isn't ethical. But is it legal? It's almost like blackmail. This will be their 1st to second time sticking a live human. Possibility of sticking the needle into to far, blowing a vein, or poking holes in multiple veins and even arteries are a lot higher than an average person who is licensed.
Class starts soon, please answer. If you can...be as legal as possible with actual information? I don't just want someone's "idea" and i "think" so, and unhelpful comments. Thank you. Additional Details Obviously, by the time I select best answer, I will have been either stuck or failed. Those of you who tried to help, Thanks. Those of you who just hated...seriously, if you didn't like it you didn't have to answer.
I have my reasons. The questions is basically closed now. Thx.

If you're in America, you have the right to your own decisions. Legally, no they cannot force you. Can they fail you? Yes, because it's a requirement of the class. Everyone knows that you cannot be forced to do something you don't want to do. However, there are always consequences. Just like a biology class. If a vegetarian doesn't want to dissect a frog or a pig, he/she cannot be forced to do it. However, they take the chance of being failed out of the class because they refused to participate in a required class. No complicated legal information needed. Good luck! |

Of course not. Walk away and fail out.
What's the situation when you do your first stick on a patient? How do you think we feel?
C'mon. |

Why does everyone want to turn everything into a "legal" issue? You know what? I'll bet there isn't a law specifically describing your situation. Participate in the danged class.
Or you do have a choice. Refuse to participate and fail. It really is simple.
Years ago my ex was going through an RMA program. I came in to be her vacutainer guinea pig. I thought it would be awful, but she did a nice job. |
