my friend was arrested for reckless handling of a firearm after his friend gave him the gun. he was looking inside it for bullets (i know its retarded but it happened) this friend is like a bro to me and i'm trying to help him find a good lawyer since he has no idea where to look. well, neither do i. so i need some help and suggestions on where to start searching.

So many questions. All he was charged with was reckless handling of a firearm? Wow. The college probably has some attorneys on various boards, committees and adjunct faculty who would be able to suggest someone. Or call the local, state or county bar association referral service (Yellow Pages, the section just before "Lawyers." Depending on where in VT, there might not be many lawyers available. And if your friend can't be bothered looking for himself, any lawyer he gets will not be impressed with his client. |

The way to find a good criminal lawyer is to go to the courthouse. See some people in suits hanging around and talking. Ask ten such people to identify the best private criminal trial lawyer in the area. Go with the majority opinion. BTW, if the claim is accidental discharge TWICE, his claim will not believed by a judge or jury or any person. |

The best place is word of mouth/recommendations from friends and relatives who have used a criminal lawyer. If you do not have anyone to ask, call your local/county Bar Association and ask them for several recommendations for a criminal defense attorney. Normally, they have lists of attorneys that they recommend on a rotating basis. Or, last option, is go to the local courthouse and ask to speak with someone in the pro se office for advice. |
