My old roommate stole 3 cellphones from me, which I was planning to sell for profit. They cost me about $40 each, but I could have sold them for about $200 in the international market. He confessed his crime to the police who responded to the case and he is currently being prosecuted. I have gotten my items back, but my opportunity for profits have been lost since then. He faces time in jail, and I have the option to negotiate how much he could pay me for compensation so he won't face the charges. His attorney offered $150. But I HATE this thief so much. How much $ should I ask for? Any guidelines for how to make my decision would be greatly appreciated.

Don't let your hate or other emotions overtake your judgment.
Ask the prosecuting attorney what is reasonable to include as restitution. I agree that a higher amount appears reasonable.
At some point, though, it makes sense to get this behind you and move on. |

If you can prove that you could have sold them for $600, then I would ask for that amount. But you must have solid proof ... pages from the internet showing that people, at that time, paid $200 each for the type of phones you planned to offer for sale.
Otherwise, take the $150 and chalk it up as a lesson to never flaunt what you have in front of someone you don't trust or don't know very well.
Hate / revenge doesn't accomplish anything at all. |
