My Mother was taking medicine not relevant to her issue.

On April 11th, my mother was admitted into the hospital due to severe pain in her left hip. My mom has a little bit of dementia but for the most part she can remember very well. I visited her daily while she was in the hospital, my mom doesn’t like hospitals and can become a little chatty if she falls asleep and wakes up and non of her children is setting next to her. One night around 10:00pm, my niece and I was visiting her and was trying to wait until she fell asleep before we left. so she finally fell asleep, My niece went home, which was 15 minutes from the hospital but my home was about 45minutes away. by the time I had gotten home, through the door, one of the nurses called and said that someone should come sit with my mom because she was trying to get up from her bed and would not go to sleep. Since I lived 45 minutes away, I called my niece to see if she could go to the hospital and find out what the problem was. My niece sat I her room with her until she fell asleep again and then she left. Sometime during that night, the staff restrained my 84 year old mother stating she would not stay in her bed. The next day, I went to visit my mother, and she could barely hold her head up, she was very sleepy. We both figured the nurses had given her something to sleep during the night so we didn’t think that was a big deal. The next day I went to the hospital to visit her and she was still sleep but would wake up every so often, this time, she couldn’t remember her own children name. We asked the nurse what was wrong with her and she said the medicine was making her sleepy. The following day, she was released from the hospital, the nurse provided us with her prescriptions. Once my mother return home, she continue to sleep and everyday she would lose a little more of her memory. I knew something was really wrong because she went into the hospital with pain in her hip, there was nothing wrong with her mind. I began to look up her medicine on line. I came across one medicine that were given her was used to treat bipolar disorder, Depakote 250mg. Well, my mother doesn’t have bipolar, so I continued to read, it also stated that Elderly patients with dementia related psychosis, having lost touch with reality due to confusion and memory loss, treated with this type of medicine are at increased risk of death????? We immediately stop giving her the medicine as it was causing her to lose more of her memory each. Now she doing better and back to the same person as she was when she first went into the hospital. Should I seek an attorney? If so why type of attorney would I need? If this doctor gave my mother the wrong medicine, someone else who is currently under his care may also be taken a medicine that is not relevant to their issue.
