My dad says he can check what websites I have been on by ringing our supplier/firewall monitor. Is it Legal?
|
I don't believe him but he says that he can ring 'The Security Guys' At work and they will tell him all the websites visited over our broadband connection, because the are paying for it.
Isn't this some kind of Privacy Crime? Because it is a home use service, so surely they cannot list all URL's and give them to my dad.
Privacy crimes with references would be great ;)
At the end of the day, my dad is a sad, pathetic, dictator anyway. Additional Details OK, I am not worried about him seeing certain sites, but I have my own computer, thankfully no browsing history.

Sorry, no privacy laws will apply. My husband watches the list of all websites we visit and has the right.
If the broadband is paid for by another person, they are technically the person who is the responsible party and therefore they have the right to monitor what you do.
It's the same at work, most companies do monitor what you do on the computer and they legally have the right to do so. |

I don't know about "ringing the security guys" but he can certainly check the history on you PC. It's perfectly legal and many parents monitor their child's internet access, as they should. |

If it is a connection provided by his employer, they can access all info... including yours. |

If his company pays for your residential service (presumably so your father can work from home), then YES, they have every right to look at the websites visited on that service.
Learn this lesson well, dude - whoever PAYS for something has all the RIGHTS to it; those who only USE something have to respect the owner's rules.
If your dad pays for your residential service, then he still has the right to review the sites visited. You may have some legal rights to your email, for example, or the items downloaded to a computer that you yourself purchased and own, but otherwise, it's his.
At the end of the day, you need to respect the rules or move out and set your own. |

Welcome to the real world. As long as you live under your dad's roof you have no right to privacy. And yes it will be quite easy for them to check which web site you go to and how long you were on it. |

If you're a minor using the computer on your parents property then yes, he can look at the web sites you've been visiting. |

no it is not illegal and if you are a minor it is his right and responsibility to keep you safe and monitoring you Internet activities is par for the course. I wouldn't imagine you would be so upset unless you we doing things you should be on the Internet. |

If its in his name and pays the bills then I suppose he can.
If you have nothing to hide then there shouldnt be a problem?? |

Since it is his house if there was a way for them to look it would be legal to have them look. I think |

If you're a minor and living under Adolf's roof, yeah, probably he can do what he wants.
But, calling the security guys at the server is likely a bluff. Cox cable for example, does track where people go on the net, they say, to provide better marketing. That means spam.
So, it's possible your service provider could be tracking everything from your IP address.
However, if you one IP address coming into your home and that goes to a router, the IP address stops at the router. That means, that it can't be tracked farther. If your house has four computers on the router, they won't be able to tell which computer viewed what site but they'll probably figure it was you.
If it were me, I'd set up my computer to clear the cookies, browsing history and not keep anything on the hard drive that you woudln't want your grandmother to see, literally. |
