My friend says he raped a girl. The rape made the news. Do I have to tell the cops?

There's a civil penalty for staying quiet. If the victim finds out that you knew and concealed it, you can be sued. Possibly successfully.

Because you are not the accused, you do not have the right to "remain silent." You would be incriminating someone else, not yourself. I think if you didn't say anything it could be obstruction of justice and if you lie, it is perjury.

If you ask me, rape is unforgivable and you should give the police the information you have. I just like being able to look myself in the mirror knowing that I'm an ethical human being.

What if it was your daughter, and someone knew who did it? You have a moral obligation to report him..it has nothing to do with forgiveness...he didn't rape you!

If I am you, I will report. The reason is to prevent him from repeating the same crime. Difficult times are not the points to commit crime. If your friendship ruins because of this reporting, your friend has no regret for what he has done. Get far away from him.

omg! of course you should report this to the police. a poor girl got raped, for God's sake! she did not deserve to be raped. your friend is not that good a guy if he raped a girl. i don't care what his excuse was or is, he is a criminal and you should not want to stay his friend. do the right and humane thing, and talk to the police. if you don't, you will have a guilty concious for the rest of your life and i hope and pray you will do the right thing. if someone had hurt you or your family members, and you got no help with evidence or anything, would you not be begging GOD to bring something to the police to nab the guy with? think about it. reverse the tables and see what you would feel like if you were in the other shoes. the shoes that the girl is in now. please do it and don't delay. thank you.

Rape has nothing to do with going through some rough times. IT is a crime of violence. You have a moral obligation to inform the police of the information that you have. If you are questioned by them and deny knowing anything then you may be charged with obstruction of justice.

Legally, if it can be proven that you knew he did it, you are considered an accomplice if you don't tell police.

Technically no...although if it were a hell bent lawyer and knew about you they could try to charge with something like obstructing justice, or failing to stop and render aid, it would be a stretch and probably wouldn't even make it in a courtroom. Seriously, I know he's your friend but you need to tell the cops or get him to go to the cops. The girl has to live with that for the rest of her life and I'm sorry but your friend can't be that good if he raped a girl and told you about it and isn't willing to take responsibility for it.

REPORT THIS! i was raped and i was so glad there were other people that reported it for me when i was too weak to do so. in some states, its illegal to not give the information that you know to the cops. you need to tell them just in case.

Wow, that's great that you forgive him, but really that's not your place. You could be charge with accessory after the fact for not telling the police. You are legally and morally obligated to tell the police.
