My rights as an employee regarding building work... UK?

My rights as an employee regarding building work... UK?

I have a long term illness that means, amongst many other things, I have a compromised immune system.

My employers are planning to carry out building work in the offices where I work, knocking down walls and restructuring the office.

I have been wondering whether it would be reasonable for me to ask them if I could either work from home, or be sited elsewhere, whilst the work is going ahead, because of my health problems. If this is a reasonable request, and they refuse, would I have a right to stay home anyway, and would I still get paid?

I'm not trying to get out of my duties as an employee, I have never taken advantage of the restrictions of my illness, but I want to make sure that I can still be of use to the company whilst they carry out the necessary works.

Thank you in advance for your answers or advice.

Thank you for your answer. Nobody knows quite what will happen yet, I just wanted to seek some advice before everything was finalised so that I would be prepared. I know for sure that my Doctor will agree that I can't work in a dust filled environment, I will mention to my employers when more is known about the plans.

Firstly, have your employers indicated what will happen to the employees whilst this work is going on?

If you are all expected to carry on work as usual, then I would expect the builders to be working outside of normal office hours, and certainly not knocking down walls whilst employees are working.

Raise the issue with your employer - don't ask about being re-sited or working from home just yet (or they may well assume you are trying to get out of work), just say you're concerned for your health and then let them talk. If you're not satisfied with their answer, then ask about working from home. Always better if it's them that actually suggest it though rather than you.

If you are sick enough to count as having a disability, your company by law has to make "reasonable accommodations". Whatever those are.
