Her father is married to a woman who doesn't treat her right and our mother is in the middle of a divorce. Right now my mother lives in minnesota and is intending on moving back to Indiana. If our mother doesn't move back to Indiana, my sister wants to anyway, but doesn't want to live with her father. I offered her to live with me as her older brother. She doesn't have a job. I told her she would have to get one and keep attending school. Is there any way that she could pick who she wants to live with???? Any additional information is very welcome.
I am 20 years old. Her father is most likely going to protest to this. Is there any way around this?

Does your father have shared custody? Because if your mother has sole custody she can appoint you as guardian for your sister.
Otherwise if you dad were to take it to court I expect he'd win the case. Your sister is old enough to get a preference for one or the other, but not for a brother.
I suggest negotiation with Dad to the extent possible, asking him to let you try this out and see if works. Does he understand the problem with his wife? |

I'm not sure where you live but I know in Canada (where I am) at 16 you can move out of your parents home and they would not be able to force you back. |
