The supreme court has never interpreted the constitutional term "natural born citizen," so it must then be interpreted as the writers of the constitution intended.
Our founding fathers wanted the U.S. to be different from the old ways of the European monarchy. For example, say the king of England married the princess of France. Then when his child should also became king, should the English ever revolt, he could request the French Military to help him put down the revolt, since the French would see the revolt as an insult because this English king would be half French. To prevent outside loyalties to our president the constitution therefore requires the president to be a "natural born citizen".
Does that then mean that both parents would also have to be citizens? It seems that that is what the framers of the constitution meant? Additional Details Obama may have been born in Hawaii. But if his father was not a U.S. citizen, then Obama would not be a "natural born citizen".

The term "natural born Citizen" has never been defined by the Courts in the course of a Presidential qualification challenge. It is believed by some that this provision means that only persons born on U.S. soil to two U.S. citizens are “natural born Citizens” of the nation and eligible to become President. There are others who believe that anyone who acquires citizenship by any means other than naturalization is a "natural born Citizen" and eligible for the Presidency. In between these extremes lie gray areas, some controversy, and various obiter dicta from the courts. A majority of commentators today argue that the Presidential Eligibility clause incorporates both common-law (Jus soli) and English statuatory (Jus sanguinis) principles.
Although only dealing with the concept of citizenship and not necessarily natural born citizenship, the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution provides an additional source of constitutional doctrine stating that birth "in the United States" and subjection to U.S. jurisdiction at the time of birth, entitles one to citizenship:
“ All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. |

No, this does not mean that any parent has to be a citizen...you simply have to be born on American soil (unlike McCain who was born in PANAMA!)

It does not. It simply means that he must be born on US territory. There is not mention in the Constitution about someones parentage if they gain their citizenship by being born in the US. By the Constitution, the child of illegal immigrants, if they are born in the US, is a citizen. |

It doesn't matter at all if either parent is a citizen. It only matters where the child is born. If the child is born in the US then he/she is a natural citizen of the US despite where its parents were born. |

If you're born in this country, you're a citizen. Try it sometime. Take a foreign mother-to-be, put her in the US, and let her have her baby. Boom! That kid's a citizen. That's how it works. And that's all "natural born citizen" means. It has nothing to do with the parents.
Think about it: six other presidents had at least one foreign-born parent. From USAVotes:
Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) is the only president born of two immigrants, both Irish. Presidents with one immigrant parent are Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), whose mother was born in England, James Buchanan (1857-1861) and Chester Arthur (1881-1885), both of whom had Irish fathers, and Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921) and Herbert Hoover (1929-1933), whose mothers were born respectively in England and Canada.
All of those men were considered natural-born citizens because they were born in the US. The parents had nothing to do with it.
Obama's parents could have been born on Mars and Klingon. Doesn't matter. What matters is where he was born. |

His mother was, therefore he is. Citizenship in the US derives from the mother. Any man can be the father, but there are generally witnesses as to who the mother of a child is.
Not to mention that he was born on US soil.
And, since the Supreme Court has turned down hearing two ridiculous suits asking the same questions it's fairly clear the Court deems him fit under law to hold the office. |
