Obama just lifted restrictions on stem cell research. Are you for or against this and why?

Cookie Monster, we are in a "mess" as you call it for reasons that have nothing to do with this issue. Keep your nasty comments to yourself.

For it. It has great potential to cure a variety of diseases and ailments. Plus, Obama promised it during the campaign, and its always good to see a politician sticking to his word.

personally I'm against abortion.. but as long as it's gonna be legal... which btw is forever.. why not do the research.. what if they cured cancer from it? or aids... totally worth it.

Fully for it. This research could cure multiple sclerosis, and free millions from a life of degenerating disease.

I am for this: It could save so many people in the future and even today its saved many cancer patients

Laurie
For. If this will help in curing many diseases, what could be wrong with it.

Stem cell research will lead to cures for Parkinson's syndrome and many other ailments so as long as its used properly and within strict guidelines I feel its the way forward and hopefully bring about a cure that will be given freely to all not just the wealthy.

B
Absolutely for. As a scientist, the ban restricted government funding (which most researchers have) for stem cell research. Research still continued through private funding, but restricted those on government money. It will not be an overnight turn around with research, but having more options open will only advance the field further.

dees
for it, the people that are against it will be the first to line up when it can cure a disability or disease that they have

reallygreeneyes
for. i thought it was a pretty disgusting move on george bush's part to ban it b/c it had nothing to do with government, just his religious views which should not determine the laws of this country. we were founded on religious freedom but that is always forgotten.

plus it will save so many people and get this country ahead in science and technology.

For it, of course. Why not, if there's the opportunity to save soo many lives and maybe find a cure for cancer i don't see why not.

for it. they are already dead

Cut Throat B****
Absolutely 100% in support of it. It should have happened long ago. I have three reasons very close to my heart to support it. It is too late for 2 of those to be helped, but I have hope that the third person in my life can benefit from the additional measures. BTW, 2 of my 3 reasons are under 40 and one of them was given 5 years to live approximately 10 years ago. She has fought hard but I think she's running out of fight.
This isn't just about helping the elderly.

My biology class had a debate. i was on the affirmative and then later got switched to the negative. So i got to see both sides of the matter. I believe that if the embryo is already going to be disposed of...we should at least put it to good use. I do not support the idea of abortion but if it is going to happen it might as well have some purpose for it. ALso people need to stop bashing bush for Restrictions??? No he just quit federal funding which i dont know if our country can afford right now. And they had private funding so the research had never stopped!!! Obama only lifeted the ban so that the Government would now pay!

Shawn
He only lifed federal money being used, however I am against it.

If Science is a tool used to murder to save, it no longer is science.

fchyenne
cookie monster has it right-the difference is instead of relying on private funding your tax dollars will fund it..go obama

I don't see how federal funding of additional embryonic stem cell line is going to do anything. None of the empbryonic stem cell research has come up with anything, and there's nothing even on the horizon, except a lot of maybes.

Even Clinton didn't believe in funding something that the private sector wouldn't because the payoff just wasn't there.

I am against this for the most part but think they should do some to help cure diseases. I thought they could get stem cells from adults too just smaller quantities so why does it all have to be with unborn babies etc?
