In a world of scarce or at least limited resources, the rate of human population growth effects everyone to some degree. Therefore, why wouldn't humans get to decide who reproduces and how often? I know it's not an easy thing to discuss or make decisions about. But when do people get to prevent the actions of others from adversely affecting them - especially in the case of potential over-reproduction?

In the USA we have to get a permit in advance for just about anything we want to do. Drive, build a porch, start a business, drag a mobile home down the road, get married etc.
Yet the one area that remains unregulated is reproduction. We aren't going to raise poodles here. We are having live human beings.
Personally I think everyone should have to pass a parenting class and then apply for a permit if they wish to have a child. If they don't go through parenting classes, and get a permit, then social services visits them within days of taking the baby home. They then have 30 days to sign up for said parenting classes, or the baby goes into foster care until the class is completed. If they sign up for the class, then they can keep the baby as long as they continue in the class.
They should also put a cap on how many kids can be claimed when claiming welfare. Max of 2 kids. No matter if you had 6, you only get compensated for 2. That will stop a lot of these welfare career moms from popping out kids to get more money.
Parenting a child is one of the most important jobs we will ever have. Why does driving a car require a license, yet having a baby and influencing what kind of person they will later be, require nothing?

I agree that something needs to be done about the population growth, but to force parents to go to parenting classes is just as good of an idea as trusting a public school to educate your child. |
