When I say bail, I mean as in "oh, this person is going to jail unless someone can pay $(insert amount of money here)". Not as in "I need financial help because I'm a CEO and this economy is horrible". Does anyone know?

It could be different types of "bail." In child support cases where the parent owes back child support, the person is told to come up with cash or go to jail. In that case, the money goes to the parent who is owed the support. Another situation where a person owes fines or has old traffic tickets is told to pay the fines/tickets owed or go to jail, in which case the money goes to the particular court. If a person is arrested on a new charge, they are committed to jail unless they pay for bail. Again, could be different situations.
Assume a $10,000 bail bond is set. If the person pays the whole 10k to the jail, they will be released pending the outcome of their case. When the case is over, the money goes back to the defendant or the person who posted the bail. If the person can't pay the whole 10K they will hire a bail bondsman who will usually charge 10% of the bail amount (or $1000 if the bond is 10K) to get the defendant out until the case is over, BUT that money is earned by the bondsman and is not returned to the defendant or anyone else. Some courts and counties allow for a person to post a 10% cash bond in the registry of the court, which is refunded at the end of the case. Other counties will let a person out of jail on a personal recognizance bond, wherein in the person merely signs his name and agrees to pay the 10K if he doesn't appear for court. Some counties charge 3% of that amount of the PR bond, which is never refunded. |

well if you pay the bail in whole you get it back when they go to there trials. if you give 10% to a bail bonds man he then puts up the whole bail and keeps the 10% for taking the chance |

In most cases the bail money goes back to the defendant, or whomever put up the money after the trial is over.
In some cases a bondsman may be entitled to a small percentage. |
