My reaction to this question really surprised me . It would never occur to me to harm anyone, but when I had a think about this, I was already thinking of ways to make the man talk, and then ways to hurt him just for harming my little sister( in real life I dont have a little sister) .wether or not physical torture is justified, if it meant the difference to keeping my sister alive, then being moral wouldnt come into it.

yes my friend it is justified, she at seven would be terrified and in shock,,shokld the caught kipnapper have human rights?? no way he should be physicically tortured,and i am one of a miillion fathers who would quite happily break his fingers one by one till he told me the answer,,,and then i would breal another one ,,just for the road

I think physical torture might be justified but not effective. I would bury him in the same way and tell him he will only get out if he cooperates, kinda puts things in perspective when you in the same position as your captive I would imagine dying slowly all alone in the dark calling for his family don't ya think?

If you are cent percent sure that he is one of the kidnappers. If you are cent percent sure that he knows the complete details of the kidnapping and the whereabouts of the 7 year old girl and is not inclined to tell. Torture him, or even shoot him in the leg, or go further. He will surely tell. But before any of this, make sure you are not fishing for information, torturing the man hoping that you will make a breakthrough. You'd better be 100% sure that he is the man, otherwise you will burn in hell if you are torturing the wrong man, and when he gets through he will put you behind bars.

Justifiable for ME to do it even right. Another question for authority to do it all together. Truly I wouldn't feel the need to justify myself, the animals that would do such a thing have left their human rights far behind them. If one is concerned with the "Morality" of it i.e. Gods opinion, I would say whatever God decides he decides and my sister needs freeing regardless and take the consequences of my actions.

Moral question here. Like the death penalty each person will have their own idea as to right or wrong. Torture, to prevent the death of an innocent person, is justified in my opinion. I say send Jack Bauer in to interrogate them. He can break anyone.

Yes it's definitely justifiable, and everyone I know would do the same thing to get that info.

Torture is not neccessary, the captive should be given the truth drug, then he will spill the beans within minutes.

Well obviously if it were my sister I would be entirely subjective and string the kidnapper up by the balls in order to get answers - desperation would cloud all issues. However, I don't know if torture is 100% reliable - too much pain may make the captive kidnapper say anything to get you off his balls, this consideration, i.e. would physical torture = valuable information comes before the moral situation i.e. is it justifiable.

I would tell him that I would let slip his details and that of his family to the local underworld and include the information that most of his family were police informers.

If the Kidnapper was being held by the Police then in most countries there would be no question about him being exposed to to torture. The Police have their own methods of interrogation which could achieve results; offering to reduce charges against the one Kidnapper if he tells about the location for example.

In any event the use of torture is wrong and two wrongs don't ever make one right.

Being an only child it's a tough question to answer! I think I would have to leave it to the police to do the questioning and do whatever I could to help the investigation. Whether it is right or wrong for you to harm the kidnapper or not you need to stay within the law or else you'll only make the situation worse.

It's very easy to sit here and say this though, you don't know how you would react if it really did happen to you though.

Torture to save a life sounds like a fair trade - he knew what he was doing when he kidnapped the girl, if you play you have to be prepared to pay.

Kidnappers aren't SAS and they would crumble very quickly, the level of pain would be minimal. In these times physical torture wouldn't be necessary, the threat would be enough.

In the US we'd beat the crap out of the ******* and throw him in with the criminals that hate child abusers, that way we have an excuse or cover up when the @sshole turns up mangled or dead.

You should try to make a deal with him that he goes unpunished if he says where she is .Because if you were to torture me I would be like "F**k It" there gonna kill me any way because there so upset and think I should be dead.And if I thought I was gonna get killed I'd be like if i go shes going with me.And I'm sure someone else being tortured would think the same.So attempting to reason with them and make a deal first is wise.Then if they dont tell beat them till they die and if they think some where durring that time telling will help they will do it reguardless.kill them for revenge anyway.and go save your sister.

Yes, physical torture is justified................ MY emotional reaction would be to want that person to suffer as much as possible......... and then after the 72 hours are up and my sister is dead I would kill him with my bare hands if ever given the opportunity............. Laws are not perfect and sometimes they need to be broken to get justice.

No, torture has always been proven to be an ineffective means of extracting accurate information (the inquisitions of the 14-15th century prove that.

It would be better to interogate him under extreme phychological pressure, frankly letting him no that his information could make the difference between a 10 year prison sentence and a 25 year sentence.

i would take whatever means necessary to get the information that i needed, im wondering what reason he had behind this though? if he wanted the money why wasnt it given to him? maybe to prevent this, but anyway yes torture, and if i could hypnosis to make him tell me, i wonder if this would even work, but all avenues should be tried

I think he may think anything from mind... but will try to council and let him to understand the pain of loosing a child and i will council him till he thinks from his heart i mean recognize the matter from his heart...

Personally, I'd kill him. But were I a professional and needed information, I wouldn't torture him. Torture wouldn't necessarily yield the truth. Beat the crap out of him yes, but actual torture, like the Americans do, no. You would get info ok, but it mightn't be what you need. Anyone who does that to a child doesn't deserve to live, but then, there are other ways of dealing with pervs like that guy. Life in prison can be torture too. Just because something is right, doesn't mean it is moral. As for criminal law, well , remember all the recent cases, at least in the UK of men and women being put behind bars for up to 20 years for offences they didn't commit. Remember the executions in the US that killed people who were innocent. That's why we have to careful about torture. As we saw in Guantanamo, people there were tortured for years and then let go home. No apology, no nothing. If they didn't go in there as terrorists, they sure came out as terrorists.
