Last summer I was confronted by police while driving out of a parking lot with two friends late at night. The police found tobacco in my pocket and arrested me for possession of marijuana. The charge was later dropped.
Two of us were arrested and the third arranged to pick us up at the station. The police allowed this arrangement, and did not contact the parents of my other friend. However, they made an exception for me, and called my parents.
It was clear to me that the police were intentionally trying to make my life difficult because I was rightfully protesting (in an orderly, civil manner) my arrest. I did not file a complaint in the following month because I was afraid that the police were going to tamper with evidence out of further anger.
My mother, a woman who suffered from serious psychological problems in the wake of my adoptive brother's history with the police (something I told the police about), nearly suffered a nervous breakdown when the police woke her up in the middle of the night and lied to her, saying that I was caught with drugs. The night was very traumatic for her, and home life has not been the same since. She is very paranoid and nearly cries every time she hears the phone ring after sunset.
Can I sue?
