Police slandered my neighborhood - anything I can do?

I am selling my house & a young couple came for a 2nd viewing
& were going to put in an offer, but asked the realtor about the neighborhood. She wasn't familiar with it & suggested asking the police. They called & the officer who answered said that they call my neighborhood "Sewer City" & that it had a very high crime rate. I'm shocked, my husband has lived here for 5 years with no problems & I've lived here for 2 years & it's very quiet.I feel he insulted us & all the nice people who live here, as well as losing us a sale! Is there anything I can do? We are moving out of state to be near to family, not because of any issues with our neighborhood!

Thank you for your opinions, I think he stepped over the mark by referring to the neighborhood as "Sewer City" and that is grossly insulting to everyone who lives here, so I'm going to file a complaint.

If the Realtor had said something like that then you might have a case.
The Cop was just giving his opinion.
I would keep trying and if the Realtor is asked for references send the prospective buyers to ask a neighbor (let your Realtor know which one) for their opinion on the area.
You may want to find a new Realtor. This one sounds like a dope. |

It's not slander if it's true, and the police probably have a pretty good idea of the crime statistics. The potential buyers have a right to know that. Can't blame the officer for giving his honest response. |

His description of your neighborhood as "Sewer city" would probably be defined as rhetorical hyperbole. If you are in the United States, or most common law countries, you will find this is protected speech. In other words, there would be no cause of action against the officer.
Privileged speech notwithstanding, you and your neighbors pay his salary. As such, you would do well to take the advice of the other respondents and file a complaint. |
