Poll - Have you ever been hurt or threatened by a mentally ill person?

this topic is touchy for me, because I worked in mental health homes, where I would maintain several of them at once.

they often got violent, and we were not allowed to touch them, so we took it, and took it, and got paid crap to do so.
How many people can just stand thier while a mentally ill person is screaming in your face and trying to beat on you?

After years of it, I broke down, knocked one on her butt, and walked out.

I always said that it was crazy that these people could beat on us, and scream at us and get away with it, it is just crazy. If any one else would do the same thing we would have them in prison, but if your mentally ill forget it, they can kill you and get away with a littium shot.

YES!!! they should be in lock down in a institution. when they are a threat to the public some thing should be done, rather then saying "it's ok, she is a retard" ....

I feel you in this, because I lost it, and I was working with them, still I couldnt do it. Any one else scream in my face, and slam a door in my face I would knock her out, but in this case we stand thier? B.S.

I did it for seven years then one day this one decides she wanted to kick me, I grabbed her foot and knocked her on her butt, then I looked at my boss and said "Good-Bye" ...

I agree with you, and as you can see I also feel extreamly powerful about this as well.

Stabbed in the shoulder by one. It made me a believer in socializing medicine, since the person in question went off her meds due to being broke.

I was raised by two unmedicated bipolar people using heavy drugs, and as a teen I was stalked by a scizophrenic (sp?)... still, I don't think they all need to be permanantly off the streets - but long term in patient care should be more prevelant. Many can function normally with proper care.

Maybe you should be an advocate for opening up all of the closed down mental institutions. Sounds like we need them more than ever!

Frequently -- then again I'm a nurse and I work quite a bit of time in the ER.

I've been hit, bit, insulted, had guns pointed at me.....we commit 'em for a few days then toss them back out for the world to deal with, then we start the process all over again.....ahhh the frequent flyer mental cases are ever so much fun.

I don't mind the really off their cracker ones - it's the silent sulking psycho/sociopath that concerns me -- because they tend not to have the outward over top signs that the schiz's and the delusional have.

Yes. In high school I had to avoid crossing paths with one girl. She would always threaten me because she thought I liked her boyfriend....even though I didn't know him. I never said anything to her....one time she tried to throw a pencil sharpener at my car as I waited for my other friends to meet me in the front of the school.

Well, my dad's bipoller, sometimes he freaks me out, and my mom, well, when i waz younger (My bff doesnt even no this, nor ne one else, x-sept my older sis, and my mom.), well all i remember is b-ing in the car w/ my mom, my older sis, and, myself. (duh) We were sorta zooming down a hill in our town and she waz thretening me, she waz screaming and yelling to me, "I'm gonna rip all your clothes to shreds and tear then apart!" I wailed "not my favorite 'angle' shirt!" u'd probably understand it more if u were there, to hear me say that cornyness, but i waz crying and everything, it was terrible, but i beleve in the far future, someone will hear my life changing story and make a movie about me, because i hav an amazing story, and ne one wouldnt belive what i have went threw. Its truly amazing and life changing. But i wont tell u my whole life. But i'll just tell u this, my dad and mom got divoresed when i was 4, me and my mom both live together in an upstairs apartment, while my older sis is working in disney world! We all hav life changing stories, and someday someone will hear us out.

No I haven't but someone that is very close to me has schizophrenia and whenever he up and decides to not take the medicine you should see how the person looks at others differently as if everyone is out to get them it scares me I just get so shaky and once he ask me a question and I was so afraid to answer him I thought I had a heart attack but they shouldn't be off the streets forever because it isn't a controllable disease it is so sad though.They should be on meds for life though just to be on the safe side...

Nope, I stabbed and injured, ( but did not kill ), the last mentally ill person who tried to cause me harm.

Yes I have been attacked by someone mentally ill. This person is fine while she is on her meds. There is no need to keep the mentally ill institutionalized as long as they take their meds.

Unfortunately I can answer yes to this question...however, there is no need to "warehouse" people who are in a troubled mental state....some people are fine when they are on their meds...would you want someone to decide YOU are mentally unstable and be able to commit YOU to an institution for the rest of your life???? I bet not.....
Let's try to look at things from someone else's perspective before casting aspersions...

Not really hurt or threatened, but harassed by a homeless person who (didn't know me) but just came up to me and said that I was going to hell because I wasn't Christian enough. Hmmm interesting, now that I think about it ... I mean interesting because of all the other people who harass others that same way ... hmmmm

I am sorry you were accosted. Here is why things are the way they are. Years ago Geraldo Rivera did an expose on a mental institution. The place was disgraceful to say the least. However, the well meaning but sadly misguided liberals used it as a focal point to attack the whole institutionalization system. The result was that many were simply closed down and the patients dumped on the street.

In that era many laws were written intending to protect the patients' rights but they made it nearly impossible to institutionalize someone without their consent. So, this brings us to where we find ourselves today.
