I almost didn't answer this until I saw some of the answers got a "thumbs down" and I couldn't figure out why. All these answers are correct. Federal law forbids your doctor from disclosing any medical information or your pharmacist from telling anyone about your perscriptions--UNLESS you signed a release. This is forbidden by the HIPAA laws. I've been married 30 years and I cannot get medical information about my wife without her permission. I don't even open mail from her doctor. This is a serious violation of federal law. I'm also a local government attorney who deals with HIPAA laws. If one of my employees calls in sick, I can't even ask him/her what the medical problem is. The best I can do is ask if he/she thinks they'll be in tomorrow. We cannot ask prospective employees if they have a disability even if it's obvious. We may ask if they require special accomodations, however. |

No, that information is private if you are in the U.S. Your doctor can put his medical license in jeopardy by revealing your medical information to anyone without your permission. |

NO they cant unless he has picked up your meds and you have him on there to know information about you and if its that way I would change it cause your parents don't have to right once your over 18. I would have them only give you all your meds they can have it flagged in the computer that way. ow if you are hurt and you cant get your meds then I would have someone other then a snoopy family member on your records that can pick up your meds but not get any information about what you have taken in the past or present. Its a HIPAA Law that no one can get any personal information other then who is approved to. |

No way! I would make sure that they are made aware that he may attempt to do this, and you are an adult so they are not to provide him with the information. However, if you are still on his insurance, he can check through the insurance company to see if you filled a prescription but not what the prescription was.
Even with a prescription number, he can not access this information due to HIPPA. If you are concerned about it, call your doc's office and the pharmacy. Let them know your concern and not to release any information to your father. |

Okay, laugh at us "Hippies" all ya want, but first say Thank you! You march your 18 years old butt down to that and any pharmacy and point to that plaque hanging there all crooked. There are many things you can see a Dr. for before 18 without parental consent, although I don't totally approve of that for prsonal reasons. But in your case. Dad is out of line. OOOOOOOn the other hand, think about why your Dad feels the need to do such a shocking (breach of privacy) thing to an 18 year old man? |

Not legal what so ever and if your doctor is telling him your info than he is able to be sued, if your dad has the prescription number he can be shady and find out alot pretending to be you at the drug store. |

In a word......NO.
Any release of information MUST be accompanied by a written form that absolves the doctor from any laws that might be broken. If the doctor releases any information AT ALL, including the fact that you are even a patient, they are breaking the law. |

It has become a blurred line, but no, you are an adult at 18 and are/should be protected.
Read this:

You can call the number at the top right and get direct information. |

Your dad I think is just concerned about you. Be thank full that he is. Just tell him what the Dr. put you on. Growing up is hard to do. But someday when you have children of your own you will look back and see why your dad cares enough to find out. |

If your doctor gives any information about anything having to do with your case, he would be in big trouble. Tell your dad you're an adult and to mind his own business. |

your dad can call whomever he pleases, but your doctor's office does not have the right to give out your personal info to anyone without a court order |

i think he does not have the right to call your doctor.. now if he had you permission to then thats ok, but if not. then no he doesn't. And all you have to do if you dont want this to happen again.. tell your doctor or his nurses that you don't want your information to be given out to noone but you.. its that patient confidentiality |

Doctors swore an Hippocratic oath not to divulge patients
details, some have even gone to prison because they
would not tell there patients details. This oath concerns
every doctor in the world so your medical records
are safe from any inquiry from your parent. |
