Prisoners put to work with very little pay - is that like slavery?
|
Additional Details "Slaves were innocent victims" A few years back one of Illinois' politicians suspended the death penalty because so many men on death row, (supposedly the worst-of-the-worst), were being proven innocent after all.
"violated our social contract" I'm losing faith in what I previously thought of as a fair social contract. Many of these guys were "born into" a "contract" which they would have had a hard time getting out of. (No wonder they broke the rules.)
Even in a legally-binding paper "contract," the rules have to be "logical;" right?

There similar in some respects--both can involve making people work for little-to-nothing. (Note: my understanding is that many prisoners look forward to working because they get to leave the grounds, and this would complicate your question, since slavery is involuntary).
However, there very different too. Slaves were innocent victims, whereas prisoners have violated our social contract and can justifiably be made to repay their debt to society. |

It is called justice. These people spent time taking advantage of people that played it straight in life by killing, robbing or raping people to try and take a short cut. Now they are being punished. They deserve it. |

NO!! They are prisoners and LUCKY they are being payed at all. Personally, i think they should repay their debt to society by paying for their room and board. But, then again, I do hate criminals. |

No, most of them *not all) asked for it by getting placed in jail in the first place. And it cost money to feed & cloth them, they should do domething to offset the costs. |

I have no sympathy for those that can not follow the law
Prisoners have it too easy in my opinion |

The concept is that free room and board with 3 meals is being a guest of the state. So mowing the lawn for extra milk and cookies is not slavery even if the wages are. Most of the work they do is for their prison anyway. When was the last time you seen a prisoner on the highway doing work. |

Not at all, frankly they should be working without pay so that their hours and labor can repay their debt that all taxpaying people are covering to keep the individual alive. Like they say if you cannot do the time, don't do the crime. |
