Privacy vs. security. What are your thoughts?

"The American people must be willing to give up a degree of personal of personal privacy in exchange for safety and security."
-Louis Freeh
To what extent should we embrace this? I'd love to hear your thoughts and ideas.

Of course you will get the people who say they want no government intrusion of their privacy and those who are so fearful they say do anything. I myself thinks there is a balance that needs to be achieved. I wouldn't care if they did strip searches, in private of course, of every person boarding a plane. That way I know there will be no way someone could hijack a plane while I am on it. When it comes to privacy in my own home, it is up to me what I let in. If I don't want "Big Brother" looking in my windows I will simply close my blinds. We cry for transparency in government but not in our own lives. Public officials or celebrities are poked, prodded and ridiculed for anything they may do wrong. But let the soccer mom get in trouble and lets keep that private the family cries. Im all for safety and whatever that may involve. If you don't want to be searched at the airport, just drive or take a ship. |

HELL NO.
"Any one who will trade freedom for security deserves neither" Ben Franklin
Our freedom is far more important than our safety. If we have to sacrifice our own safety at the cost of being free, then so be it. We don’t need the false security of big government dictating us how to live our lives. |

I think we would be better off following:
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. "
-Benjamin Franklin |

As long as we can provide security without exceeding the bounds of our constitution, then I am for security. As soon as we start violating the constitution, I am against all security measures.
Of course, there must be some measure of security. Even the Ben Franklin quoters above are not likely against our military, coast guard, border patrol, TSA agents, police and several other organizations that provide security to us. |

I think we have reached the point of "accommodating criminals" rather than protecting the public. There is a law in place in Sacramento, Ca that states people are not to wear hoodies, baggy jeans, or hats inside the mall because they cannot check people's background at the door. No sh*t! No one at the mall is going to stand there and give you their criminal history and personal information before entering. There aren't even enough hours in the day to check people before they go into a store. There is, however, a place called JAIL, where we could be keeping people who do commit crimes. There are so many "repeat offenders" in the streets, while people who do stuff that is not even serious spend time in jail. It's amazing how many innocent people have lost their right to privacy because of the "Human Rights Act". |

At this point, the military and intelligence arms of the U.S. Gov could easily detect and suppress even a full scale rebellion (i'm not saying one is necessary).
The privacy we think we have is largely an illusion; if you think the NSA can't look at every record and communication you've ever made on an electronic device then you are kidding yourself.
This question is moot; our security has become almost absolute, and whether or not we admit it, our privacy has been almost completely stripped from us. |

We have to ask ourselves what price we are willing to pay for security and safety. How much freedom are you willing to give up for safety and security? You can't be both completely free and completely secure. |

I would turn to the quote from Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
America, as a ridiculously young country, became a world super power because of these ideals. Freedom, individual rights, democracy, capitalism . . . these are all anathema to the far left but this is exactly how and why America is what it is. |
