Putting your integrity to the test...what do you think?

I wanted to get some thoughts on this because I had never known anyone that this has happened to....

My husband told me today that his co-worker was fired from Macy's because of a loss prevention set up. He worked in the shoe department or something and they planted $600 on the ground in his sales area. He spotted the money, but didn't touch it at first. An hour or so later, it was still there, so he picked it up and pocketed it. He was fired 3 days later! I'd be so horrified!! What would you do? Would you have known it was a set up? Do you think it's wrong that companies would do this? Just curious as to what you think...

Sounds like entrapment, but they are not the police, and are not necessarily bound by the same restrictions. If you find money in a store, what is the right thing to do with it? You know you didn't lose it, why put it in your pocket?

The place I work (not Macy's) considers ethics violations to be firing offenses also. If I found money at work,.I would turn it in to security.
A word to the wise is sufficient.

Its called entrapment and the POLICE are NOT allowed to do it but private "security" goons can do anything they want.

That is horrible. What would they have done if a non worker there picked it up? I would have took the money. I might suspect something because that is a lot of money. I think it is wrong.

Did they fire him instead of laying him off so that they don't have to give him some unemployment benefit? I would talk to lawyer if theres like free consultation or something. What is the company policy on money laying around like that?

Macy's and other employers need to be confident that their employees exercise good judgment and integrity at work.

Your husband's co-worker picked up something that was not his. It could have been dropped by a customer who should have expected to recover it from store security. He had three days to do the right thing and he failed.

In addition, even if your husband's co-worker has no personal integrity, he is not bright enough to work at Macy's. As an employee, he should know that every square inch of every store is visible on their cameras.

I hope that your husband is more intelligent and has greater integrity than his former co-worker.
