That answer is "BOTH". This country is so lawsuit slappy happy that everything and everyone goes around with a big "CYA" attitude. Sad, but the truth. |

its cause we need social order. If you have ever traveled the world, you will see the chaos that comes without having these small things such as traffic signs...... |

This is actually a great question.
I would have to say that most frequently it is B.
I have actually seen disclaimers on irons that said, 'Do not use on clothes you are wearing'.
I once saw one on a snow blower that read, 'Do not use on the roof'.
Have you ever heard of the Darwin Awards? |

I would have to say the answer is "b". Great as America is, we live in a land of greed and immorality. You can sue anyone for anything now a days. Just look at the Nebraskan Senator who is suing GOD for natural disasters. |

B........Thats the answer. Corporations love their money and don't want to lose it in lawsuits. |

Interesting question!
I believe that it started out as a courtesy. Trying to help people acclimate themselves to their new surroundings. We are a nation of immigrants after all, and we wanted every new person to feel welcome and be able to find their way around.
Today, I believe that in many instances (B) is correct! |

it depends on the sign.
different ones have RADICALLY different purposes.
you know that most parking Garages have big signs saying that they are not responsible for theft or damage to your car?
well, they can put the sign up, but legally they are fully responsible. |

both.
a came first then b necessitated the abundance of those based on a. |

It's B I believe. Companies have to go through all sorts of stupid loops to satisfy everyone. Someone can have an accident - their fault - but say you didn't have a sign warning them not to chew gum and walk at the same time; so you get sued.
It's the dumbing down of the nation. |
|

B. People are winning lawsuits because coffee burns them... wow imagine that. So companies have to defend themselves from all sorts of stupid lawsuits. |

Most assuredly-B is the best answer. There are warnings on blow dryers that say not to use while sleeping.........this always makes me laugh as I do not remember ever waking up with my blow dryer in my hand and my hair already dry :) |

I think the answer is both a and b. As being the most developed and advanced country, it is a matter of pride and prestige for the country. Also as a democratic free country, the citizens of the country have certain rights. The government has certain responsibilities and duties in turn for the taxpayers. You can tell that in a sense they prevent having legal trouble if they can maintain road signs, freeway markings etc. |

In this litigous American society, we have been forced to spell everything out in signage and disclaimers. I blame the legal profession for this! They have few moral values and ethics, rather, they are motivated by the almighty dollar! |

It's (b) more than (a) - although (a) comes in there along the line. No one wants to take the federal blame when something happens and people are made accountable for their actions in every mean with no excuses left for chance. |

b. About 90% of the time. |

It's more a case of 'B,' with your choices so limited there. If someone has something untoward happen to them, and they weren't warned about that possibility in advance, they can sue, which of course is undesirable. A better explanation for all the information everywhere is to --inform-- people. If you don't tell people where things are, how do they know? We advertise a lot here. The airport likes money, so they want people to know how to get there, and chances are those taking a plane aren't local. And if you've got this really cool natural national monument, what good does it do if nobody knows about it? So they have signs for that. Advertising, merchandising, informational, legal... You have to communicate. People can't pick things up through osmosis. Knowledge doesn't work that way. |

I don't think it is either. It is just common sense to explain it all. |

the second one. people sue for anything they can get. i used to work at mcdonalds, and a girl was told to mop the lobby, and she did, but when she was on the way to get a wet floor sign she slipped...before the sign was up. she sued and it was her fault! people are rediculious |
