Question about living together and sharing bank account?

i has not happen.. but what if you won the lottery... and your bf or gf had kids and their ex had coustody..could they take part of your winnings..

Yes...

A joint bank account is that, either of you can put money in, either of you can take it out. If you were dumb enough to have a joint account and put in a million dollars the other person could take it out and you could not do a thing about it.

It counts as assets for BOTH of you. So if the ex spouse found out the person had a joint banking account with a million dollars in it, they could ask the judge for more money.

If there is an ex-spouse issue, it would be best to keep the accounts separate so that YOUR money does not show up as an asset of the other person.

If your not maried, dont share accounts, relationships change

Unless you are married, the money would belong to you and you alone.

no .. not even if you were married .. that is your money .. plus the custody order should already be in order ...goodluck with the lottery - keep me in mind to share your winnings!!!!

no, they have no legal means to anything you own, even if you married their mom, they still have no legal means, especially minors

You said it................ YOU WON the lottery!!!!!!!!! Not them

if they are a signer on the account, yes.

There are TWO ways to have an account with a bank.......the common way is Party A OR Party B.

The protective way is Party A AND Party B.......thus requiring 2 signatures before money is released.

otherwise, unless you are married, do not share an account........you are only asking for trouble.

If you are not married and it is in your name only, I don't think the ex can touch it.

Tom
Beware of states that recognize common-law marriages. If the significant other is behind in support payments, the winnings may be considered shared property and subject to being withheld to catch up on the arrears.

they have no right to your money. Even without the lottery they cannot touch your salary, even if you are married.

Don't play with fire!

Set up your own separate account even before you will the big bucks.

Michelle
If you aren't married they can't take your money. Unless . . . but I wouldn't open an account up together because they could tap into that account if it's in his and your name.

Tank
Be wary of sharing a bank account. That can be used to establish de facto marriage, and in a community property state, half of your lottery winnings would indeed belong to your significant other.

Terryc
Only if you wanted them to.

If you purchased the ticket for yourself out of your money, then it is your winnings.

If you purchased the ticket to share with your cohabiting partner, then they might have a claim on their share of the winnings, but this is unlikely to flow automatically, unless their winnngs for garnished for support money not paid.

Not on your share as you are not required to support them.

I fail to see how dependants of a non-cohabiting bf/gf can have any claim on your winnings.

However, the non-cohabiting bf/gf may e affected as above if the children are legally dependant.

No if you are not married and you won it, it is all yours

I don't know, but to be safe, I wouldn't tell 'em about winning!!
