Question about moving out at 18?
|
Assume I am well off and I have a good relationship with my parents, very good.
However, I want to move out at 18, I'm 17 now and on December 16 I turn 18. My dad is TOTALLY against it, as he told me he wants me to stay till I'm 25+, my mom disagrees. She told me it's good that I'm getting out on my own, even though I'm her son and doesn't want to see me go she is happy for me.
Please don't give me advice at all.
My plan was to leave a week before my birthday, to avoid the over bearing emotion my mother and others will have, including me, on the day of my birthday. So I'd really like to leave a week early.
Now, I know my dad, I don't THINK he would issue a missing persons warrant, but, if I leave a week early, could he? Would it have any affect? Or would it not matter since my birthday is in a week?
How long CAN I leave before my birthday?
Again, I don't need your advice.
And I am not burning bridges, everything is worked out. I have everything I need.. I just (with all my might) want to avoid that type of emotional confrontation. It'd be easier on everyone.
And if you may, any advice from those who've moved out on their own? Got a little freedom? How did you cope with the drama of your parents?
Much obliged.

Doing what you are planning will amplify the drama way more than just waiting until your birthday passes and moving out in a calm way after all the birthday hoopla is over. You cannot legally go before your birthday anyway, so chill out and do this the adult way if you are wanting to be seen as an adult. There is no need to zoom out of the house on your birthday date. Just have your birthday, thank everybody and have a great time and leave in the next week or so. You will have crazy insane drama that you will regret for years if you take this course. And it isn't legal anyway. |

You cannot move out before your 18, unless you are emancipated. Your parents could file a missing person/runwawy report, you don't need that drama in your family, so don't do it. Just stay home until you turn 18. I moved out at 18 & spent a lot of time working to pay the bills. I could afford to live on my own, but it wasn't that fun, kind of boring. I moved back home a few months later for a couple of yrs, it was less of a burden, I felt like I had more time/freedom, & I was able to save up a lot of money. |

Umm, they still have rights over you till your 18, so moving out before your birthday would probably not be the smartest thing. Quit being dramatic, jees. |

You can probably move out without it being a problem but then you will be upsetting everyone - is that your plan? Why all the emotional upheaval? If you are adult and looking at things in a reasonable way, you'd just wait until your birthday and have things set up before for an apartment and then let your family know ahead that you intend to move out on your birthday. If you can't tell your dad that that is the decision you have made, then maybe you aren't adult enough to move out even when you ar 18.
You will hurt your Mom and get your dad riled up and why? Are you trying to show them who is boss? You have some issues you haven't mentioned here and some conflicts, probably with your dad. Why stir it up. Let htem know ahead of time, the week ahead if you want that you will be moving and then just ignore whatever they say and make your arrangments - get your apartment set up to move sometime after your birthday - or on the first of the next month and then go. There would be no question that you are 18 and have a right to move out and your parents would know that you are of legal age and can do nothing about it. So why do anything else?
Being an adult is not about being 18 or any age, but in making mature decisions in a well-thought-out manner. It is being reasonable and deciding on your optons and making your decision and then doing it. It is paying bills and being responsible. You dad probably would like you to go to college and that would be best as it is hard to get by without a college education anymore, or at least having a career or training of some kind. With your dad wanting you to wait until 25, is it because he wants you to go to college? You can sure use the money for that purpose. My grandson was out on his own (with some friends) for about a year but he is moving back home now to save money and to continue his college education. It is a good decision, though I think he is old enough to be on his own. He screwed up in college where he had a scholarship and lost a continued scholarship because he didn't attend one of his classes consistently and didn't work hard enough. He was bright and thought he had it made. He is brighter now and does plan to go on to school. I wish you well and hope that you are making decisions based upon what is wise and where you need to go in life, and not just because you want to be independent and to grow up. You need to grow up first and then move out. |

just tell him you're leaving and ask him not to file a warrant. If he does, he is an overprotective parent. Plus, by the time it goes through legal and the system, it will be your very happy birthday. Just to make sur, you should probably not leave until the day before. |

I would just wait to move out after ur bday. depending what state ur in he could probly issue a missing persons if u just up n leave. people actually get arrested for that stuff. becareful. as far as ur parents emotions ur dad will disagree at first but in the end if u prove urself that u can be responsible he will be proud of u in the end. as far as ur mom goes i moved out back in march and shes still sort of sad. its gonna happen at what ever age. |

You can legally move out with parental permission (like from your mom, not both parents necessarily) when you are 16. However, waiting a week will bring down the emotionall stress on your dad. |

Go ahead and move out. You're going to to do it sooner or later.
It'll be good for you and you're dad will adjust...believe it or not he knows how you feel. |

Your dad, if he will, he can issue a missing person warrant, even if your over 18. Its hard at the start when you move out, both on your parents and on you, you will obviously start missing them after a while, that is if your not in contact with them. I'm 19 now, i moved to the states and like you, had a really good relationship with my mam (my dad not so much, but that's a different story), i haven't seen them, or my sister for 3 months. its really hard when you've been with your family just to get up and go. By al means, if you can then do, if worst comes to worst, you move back in and your dad will be annoyed at you for a while. Hope this helped. |

Just me
|
I moved into the dorms shortly after I graduated HS and have only been back at my parents house during transitions from move to move (I've lived in a few other states at well). It's the best thing in the world! I'm 26 now so it's expected, but I will take only living off of $20 a week than to go back to my parents house. They weren't strict by any means, but the freedom is great. There is a certain pride factor that goes with being independent, even if you don't have any extra cash! :) I think it's great that you are getting out on your own and not going to be one of those freeloaders off your parents until your 30. Sorry, I don't really know the answer to your question about how soon before your birthday can you leave, but I would think a couple of days would be ok, cause I think you have to be missing at least 24 hours before they can even do anything, maybe even longer since your older, I'm not really sure. |

As long as you can find work and pay your bills, it's a smart move. It's good to be independent. |
