I left his car outside a Coffee Shop unlocked and with the keys in the ignition. I had dropped into the shop to get a sandwich. I was in the shop approximately 10 minutes. As I emerged there from an unknown person jumped into my car and drove off at speed. I tried to run after the car but to no avail.
As it turned into a lane Patrick, a local resident was crossing the lane and the car struck and injured Patrick. The unknown assailant stopped the car and fled the scene. Meanwhile I eventually caught up with the car and saw Patrick injured on the ground. I explained to Patrick that I owned the car and it had been stolen.
Patrick suffered injuries to his legs and had to go under some 5 operational procedures.
Can anyone please Advise me of my legal position and Patrick's of legal position? Thank You
