I am embarrassed to have you on my side.
Roe v. Wade is a judicial opinion, not an act. It was not "enacted," it was decided.
Cheney and Company are no longer in power--thank god.
Who are the "morons"?
Please stop embarrassing our side. |

It doesn't need to be overturned. Before abortion was legalized, it was done in back alley clinics with dirty instruments. The newer generation is progressive while the "party of no new ideas" is primarily stuck in their ways, older people who can't stomach the idea of conceding power to the younger generation.
I'm likely older than you are, but I'm having a very good time watching the Cheney gang twist in the wind, worrying if and when they may be going to prison over torture-gate. Better than any soap opera... |

Before 1980, the Pro Life movement was overwhelmingly Roman Catholic. Catholics had been fighting against abortion for centuries. They also fought against birth control.
But in 1980 the abortion issue was 'designed' for political purposes to get Fundamentalist Christians in the South to vote for Ronald Reagan. In the previous election, 1976, they had voted for Jimmy Carter because he was a truly sincere Christian (perhaps the last one in the White House) and his sister was even a famous evangelist. But part of the GOP's strategy for the 1980 campaign was to capture the South by giving the GOP the image as the Party of Christian Values.
Reagan promised to propose a constitutional amendment, no less, to declare the pre-born as 'human beings', and so make abortion equal to murder. Plus many high-visibility Christian leaders (like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson) were corrupted to conflate a political message with their spiritual one, as they still do, to convince their flocks that it was their Christian Duty to vote for one party over the other. Some of my Christian friends, at the time, even told me that putting Reagan in the White House was part of God's plan for the Final Days.
Of course the Republicans had no real intention of even trying to ban abortion. It was just not politically wise since 75% of Americans are partly or completely pro-choice. Even 75% of Republican women were somewhat pro-choice.
And besides, the REAL Republican agenda is not about 'family values' at all. The real GOP worships Mammon not God.
Between Reagan and two Bushes, seven Supreme Court justices were appointed. (Only six of them remain, since Sandra Day O'Connor retired, but that's six of nine, a good clear majority). But every one of these justices was promised to be the single 'swing' vote needed to overturn Roe v. Wade. And yet they never actually took up the case.
This is partly because the Republicans know it's not a good idea, it would hurt them more than help them. But it's also because they have a deliberate strategy of keeping the issue alive, to milk it for as much political mileage as possible. These days the issue is pretty much used up. You hear it from Christians, but hardly ever from Republican politicians anymore.
The coalition forged between the Reagan Republican Party and the Christian Right in the US is breaking down. In the 2008 election, none of the Republican candidates wanted to be identified too closely with the Christian Right. (The single exception was Mike Huckabee, who saw this as an opportunity to carve out a niche for himself as 'The Christian Candidate'--but you can see how that decision destroyed his candidacy!) The one who won was John McCain, probably the LEAST favored of the Christian Right, who came from last place!
So perhaps the Christians themselves are seeing the issue for what it is, an issue cleverly and cynically 'designed' by the Republican Party to get votes and money from Christians, to string them along with lip service. |

To overturn it they need to appoint at least 5 justices to the supreme court that will overturn it and a case that will allow them to overturn it, currently they have neither. |

Basically, you would need a number a different things to occur for a Republican president to overturn Roe v. Wade.
1. needs to have a Republican Congress
2. needs to appoint many justices (to overturn Roe, you would want a vote of 9-0, 8-1, or 7-2, not 5-4)
3. needs to pass law that creates a legal challenge to Roe
4. needs to have lower courts attempt to overturn the law
5. all this needs to occur in a relatively short period of time
Even if Roe is a poor decision by the Supreme Court, it would take a lot to overturn it because it is legal precedent now. |

Rep's in congress will never do anything to stop Abortion.
They had congress for 12 years
They had the White House for 8 years
and they had a conservative Supreme Court for six years now.
Only one bill in congress to stop all Abortion and what did Rep's do. They put the bill back into committee and let it die a slow death.
Rep's are using conservatives just to get their votes. |
