Roommate Skipped Town & Stuck Me With The Bills?

My roommate and I signed a 1 year lease, but had to break the lease early because he got transferred due to his job. He informed me that his company would pay the 2-month buy-out fee, but the apartment complex would be keeping our security deposit. I searched and found a new apartment with my boyfriend, and we signed the lease there. My roommate then left for his new town and his new job. I haven't heard from him since. He still owes half of the rent for our last month, used the money from his company to buy a car instead of pay our buy-out, and I am stuck paying them $200 a month for the rest of my life (it seems). He also never moved his things out of the apartment, so I was socked with the "cleaning" and "removal" fees on top of the back-rent and move out fees. I have plenty of signed documents from the apartment complex with his signature, and photographs of the condition he left the apartment. What are my rights?

I already sat down in a consultation with an attny. to discuss this, however I don't have the money to pay one. I pay $800 a month in student loans, on top of my other bills, which is why I really want whatever I can get from my old roommate. I'm stuck and frustrated.

Well, if it was me, I would remind the landlord that 2 people singed the lease. I would only pay half the tell the land lord if he wants the other half he'll have to track down the other lessee. |

Get an attorney and pursue him through legal means. However, the cost to pursue him may be higher than what you will end up paying out for his half.
If it is the principle of the matter, go after him anyway. |
