School Being Unfair Please Read!?

Hi, before i ask my question let me give you some background info. I live in a city with a population of 3,000. So a small "tight-knit" community with the nearest city of 10,000+ being 50 miles away. The kind of community where the last murder was in 1987. You get the picture, we all know each other, and we all know each others business. Anyway we have a single high school that is connected to the middle and elementary schools, with only doors separating the schools. Being near graduation, the Seniors pulled a prank. They stuck about 200 plastic forks in the lawn in front of our school, spelling 2009. Now, they cleaned it up, the seniors, but got in trouble. Despite the fact that they didn't cause harm or damage, they received a 2 day out of school suspension. Now my question isn't about that punishment, but it is this: three students this past Tuesday got wasted on campus during their lunch period. Seniors at our school are given the permission to have open campus, but these students drank while on campus during school hours. The gave the bottles to a person to throw away off campus. Then they went to their 7th hour class drunk. after being called down to the office, their lockers and cars where searched and they were brought to the county jail via police. But one of these students has a father who happens to be the police chief. They were charged a fine for underage drinking, but were given, get this, only 2 days out of school suspensions. They drank on campus and got the same punishment as those who harmlessly and soberly put forks in the grass. when the seniors went to talk to our principle they were told that you can't differentiate between a good and bad prank. They brought it up to our school superintendent, who told them they can only speak one at a time, he says it was policy, but it is probably because he knows they students are right and doesn't want to be overpowered. Then, after speaking to only one student, he tells the other 15 that he isn't going to repeat himself so they might as well go to class. They had went through the student handbook and done a lot of research and found last year two students had been expelled after having beer in their vehicles after a drug lock down. They hadn't been drunk, by the way. So we are saying that this is complete double standards, which it is, right? And we want our city to know about what is going on so this can be looked into. We have a weekly newspaper that comes out on Thursdays, and if you write a letter to the editor, it will be published regardless of length, as long you sign it. So my question is, should we write to the newspaper about this? Explain how student's with certain last names get treated differently? And how would you go about doing it? Through email? or just bring is in the office? Also how should we set it up? and tell me if you believe it is even worth mentioning. Thanks in advance, we just want to show the community just how unfair going to school is, and how our rights are almost non-existent. Also, are we allowed to put up flyer's around the school saying "read this weeks Letter to the Editor" or something along those line? And can we be in anyway punished for bringing this to a public source? We are not trying to get anyone in trouble by the way. and it is a public school. Can we get in trouble if we went to the newspaper about it? It's a city newspaper not a school newspaper so i don't see how we could, but im open to anyone who knows what they are talking about. I know people are gonna say life is unfair, but we are trying to make it more fair for us and others. We don't want a lesser punsihment or to give anyone more, we just wanna open up the eyes of our narrow minded community!
