YES. I will agree with that one.
I smoke but never did around my kids and don't do it anywhere near my grandchildren.
Its my habit,, not theirs |

You should not smoke, but how would they enforce such a law in your home? |
|

Darby
|
No, but I sure do believe in the concept that we should have enough sense not to do it any more, especially in an enclosed area like the car or house. |

I think it should be made illegal around our children,
The least thing I would want is for them to breathe it in.
Thank you :)
Such a good question. |

No, I think smoking is among the nastiest habits there is but it is NOT the governments role to do such a thing. Education programs and trying to get people to stop is one thing but making laws is insanity |

Sure....then maybe we can have all adult places where we do not have to deal with kids. |

the government needs to get the @#$% out our lives and if people would have the balls to tell someone they are a moron for smoking were it can harm a child it might happen less. |

Your TIMING of this question could not be better!
My city is finally putting a vote on the ballot to make our city *smoke free.*
This issue has put many (both smokers ans non-smokers) on edge by it infringing on (our) *Constitutional Rights.*
I do understand how passive smoke can and does effect others (mainly in public surroundings. <-which is part of this issue.)
HOSPITALS and other enclosed buildings being pointed out as primary contributors to this passive smoke.
ONE ISSUE that is driving this issue (pro / con) is the FREE ENTERPRISE-matter. - Many local businesses contend that they "allow" their clientele to smoke; which improves thier business-base (more traffic) to visit thier location.
->To get (back) to your primary question about Smoking around CHILDREN, I SAY H**L NO!
Help them live without all the toxic carcinogens in smoking as long as they can - before someone (incl. the Media) gets them hooked.
*SEND ANY CONVICTED SMOKERS TO A CONFINED HOSPITAL WARD of cancer victims so they can SEE what can and does happen to smokers.
This should settle the issue for / against either side.
My "Politician's vent." :-' |

YES - and I am a smoker myself. Where I live there are a ton of public places where you cannot smoke anymore. In fact, most airports here will even make you walk across the STREET to smoke even if you are outside! A minimum of 25 feet from the buildings downtown! There have even been a few states here where it is illegal to smoke inside your own car if you have children under 18 with you.
I wish they made rehab for smokers and just made cigs illegal altogether. There is not any single thing that is good about smoking at all. Its poison and I wish I could quit. |

YES!! Including (especially) smoking while pregnant!! Adults are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of children. And that should include preventing them from getting second hand smoke.
It amazes me that peoples' excuse for not wanting a law that would protect the health of our children is that they personally cannot think of a way to enforce it...or don't want to go through the trouble. How selfish. |

Yes, it should be. I don't see why this bad habit should be thrown into the face of children. This example may set them on a course to attempt "smoking" at an early age. |

well, people shouldn't smoke around kids but the question asks more whether we are willing to spend more money (tax money) on enforcing this - like should the police be doing this? and as a society do we really want to spend tax money to enforce this. it isn't free. |

As long as smoking is a legal substance, why should it be illegal around children? Because it's a health risk? So is eating fatty, greasy cheeseburgers from McDonald's, drinking Coca-Cola, or feeding kids foods treated with preservation, chemicals and artificial ingredients. So where does it stop? Should it also be illegal to eat french fries around children??
Politicians have made smoking a scapegoat, but they're too damned cowardly to make smoking an illegal substance because they enjoy billions of dollars in tax revenues from the manufacture, distribution and sale of cigarettes. If politicians had any gonads, they'd make it illegal to manufacture, distribute or sell cigarettes.
I don't smoke, and abhor being around smokers. But it's hypocritical to say, "Don't smoke around children", or "Don't smoke in public places" unless you're also prepared to say, "If you smoke, go to jail." (just like you do if you smoke pot, use cocaine, or shoot up with heroin). -RKO- 01/20/08 |

There will never be a law about banning smoking in your home or around children. What they need to do is EDUCATE people on how dangerous second hand smoke is to children, especially when riding in a car. Look at the film on the inside of the windshield. That is the same film on the inside of their little lungs. |

No it should not be made illegal. It should just be common sense. As for the comment caitlin made obviously a non smoker. If all smokers gave up non smokers wouls also pay a lot more tax. |

I can not believe the answers here. We live in a free society. And if parents choose to smoke around their own children, that's their choice. Those who answered yes appear to only want freedom when it agrees with their value system. I don't smoke and never will, but I tolerate the choices of other Americans. That's the real definition of freedom. Are we going to pass laws that tell us what foods we can give our children; how much TV they can watch; how much exercise they must have per week. I don't care how much you hate smoking and it's side effects, it's none of your business how other people raise their children. Good intentions should never ever suppress freedom. |
