Should car drivers who are over the drink limit and kill a pedestrian be given life in prison?

Actually, you need to expand this question to:

Should people who meet the legal requirements for impairment in their state and who kill a pedestrian be given life in prison?

That way it covers people who are impaired by drugs, alcohol, vapors, etc.

And to answer it, I say No. My first reaction was to say yes, but I think there is a better way. Make them drive a car with an interlock ignition device in it (breathalyzer that connects to the ignition) for 5 years. Put their face up on a billboard with the details of what happened. Make them an example to deter others from doing the same.

YES most definitely. i think anyone who drinks and drives should be treated the same as those who carry guns or knives- they have the potential to kill anyone while driving intoxicated

bethdimas
no, they should be put on the motorway and get run over by at least 5 lorries, well till they die anyway
I think drink driving is DIS-GUST-ING

yes, you would not ask the question if it was somebody in your family who had been killed.

yes, and they should have EVERYTHING taken off them, down to the last scrap of money, and they should be named and shamed!!!!!!!

lippy
Of course they should be. Otherwise, there will be a culture of pepple who will go around doing as they please.

That's a tough one. I know a really nice guy who has a good job, and a fine family. He's a functioning alcoholic. He got drunk and killed a 10 year old girl in a traffic accident. They sentenced him to 10 years in the can.

I honestly don't know what a fair sentence would be. I guess that's why judges earn the big bucks for making life and death decisions.

boredgirl
Yes they took someone else's life theirs should be taken too. An eye for an eye.

Yes without doubt. Also people who drive under the influence of drugs. People who drive without insurance should receive 10 years. All should be banned from driving for life.

motyl4u
Well, very interesting question. I think since they didn't plan the murder they should spend some time in prison and their license should be revoked for good.

execute them, premeditated murder, plain and simple.

Yes as they knowingly got behind the wheel of a car and used it as a weapon killing an Innocent person!!

Rayman
Death penalty. They aren't supposed to drink and drive in the first place. That's like doing 3 different things against the law. Plus, because of that individuals actions, someone died. That's man slaughter basically.

Treat that person like they killed someone because that's exactly what they did.

the situation depends upon the driver,if he wants to avoid a life sentence he should hit the person with the car and then take a drink

nobelow
It is certainly ethical that one who takes life should pay with their own irrespective of the nature of their crime. Pity the system doesn't work that way.

It should be a very lengthy sentence, I agree.

I think that the family of the deceased should decide the fate of the driver. I have seen one too many people killed because someone decided to drink and drive. At least the family would know that the person responsible for this was getting true justice. I've also seen drunk drivers go to court over this sort of thing and get away with a suspended liscence or some other "slap on the wrist" sentence. I'm done ranting now and hope I didn't offend anyone. This just hits close to home for me.

Yeah, but if they are a local celebrity (ie Lenoard Little)...they get 90 days and probation. And if you think I am being absurd, three weeks later a man was convicted and sentence of life after killing a person driving drunk. He was just a regular joe schmo.

I agree with lucky J. drinking while driving shows that you care as much as a serial killer about the life of your fellow citizen.

the serial killer purposely kills ppl, whilst the drunk driver purposely got behind the wheel.

Its real simple math. Drunk + Driving = High risk of injury or death to you or others.

If you can avoid shoting someone by not firing the gun, then you can equally avoid murdering someone by not getting behind the wheel while drunk.

They can be given life in prison already, actually. It's a maximum sentence and it rarely happens in cases of vehicular manslaughter but if the person was also grossly drunk and was committing other crimes then there is a good chance they are effectively going to jail for the rest of their life.

As for punishment, I personally should have their hands, eyes and feet surgically removed and put in jail for 20 years after which they are released to wander the desert to die of starvation.

Either that or killed.

I think today there is enough publicity showing the dangers of drink-driving, etc. ,that there is no excuse for getting drunk and then getting into a car to drive home or wherever. I think execution is a bit harsh though! But life in prison is definitely proper order, and should be given out regularly, and then we might see a reduction in this curse on modern society.

anonymity1111
Yea for sure.. Who asked him to drink before getting behind the wheel..!!

sway_ii
Anyone who kills a pedestrian should be. Especially people who ARENT under the influence, they cant drive and they are sober, idiots.
