I recommend pepper spray if you have no experience with a gun.
Also if you do not lock your dooe someone could break in and steal your gun.
Your gun would then be sold to a felon who will use it to threaten or kill someone.
Stick with the pepper spray. |

If you're not careful with the door, forget about having the gun.
They are great things to have for protection, but if you cant even keep your door locked you wouldnt be able to properly care for the gun and that could result in an accident. |

So...you're not "...as careful as we should be..." so you think you should get a gun?!?! Hmmm....something wrong with dumb and careless people having loaded firearms... |

If you're not smart enough to lock the door, I wouldn't put it past you to accidentally shoot the room mate |

grow up, take self defence, and lock your darn doors. |

No, or at least not yet. If you aren't responsible enough to practice good personal safety habits, then you aren't responsible enough to own a gun. Instead, take a womens self-defense course, get in the habit of locking your doors and using the peep-hole, and stay aware of what is going around in your neighborhood by reading the papers. Meet some of your neighbors, travel together whenever possible, and carry a cell phone with a 911 panic button. |

Unless you really know how to use one good and would use it if you needed to, then don't get one ... it could get you killed. If you shot someone by mistake, it could send you to prison. Think about it very seriously and don't be influenced by what others say, if they say you should, because it is your decision and responsibility, not theirs.

First of all, why not try the basics..like locking the door? Getting an alarm system? Putting a 2 X 4 propped up in the window? Getting a chain lock? Before resorting to buying a weapon.
You may also look into getting some pepper spray.
I can see one of you coming in late at night and accidentely shooting the other one. |

I wouldn't get a gun, especially if you have a roomate. One of you could think the other's a burgler and *bang* dead... I'd say you could get a dog, or just a "beware of dog" sign(if the person thinks there's a dog in there, he may not want to come inside). or get some cheap alarms to put on your windows and such. Maybe just get a taser or something. But guns are risky if you're not careful...

"me and my roommate" does not sound very intelligent. Not being careful with locked doors, etc also shows a bit "lame brain" behavior on both your parts.
So NO, I do not think you should get a gun. If you can not remember to lock the door, you will probably not remember all the safety rules with owning and using a gun.
I would recommend you get a Taser. That way if you continue your dumb behavior at least you will not kill someone.
(Had you come across as relatively intelligent, I would have told you exactly how to get a gun and a concealed weapon permit.) |

You are better off, investing in a "dog." You legally, can take it for walks, to protect yourself when walking. You can leave it in
your car, with the window slightly open. Afterall, nowone is
going to shoot your dog to steal your car, and with the dog in
there, they don't want to steal it then, anyway.
It has also been proven, many people get killed, with their own
gun, than someone elses. if you have not been in the
Military, and not even "trained," to use a weapon.Go 4 a dog. |

If you are unwilling to take the life of another human being, do not get a gun for protection. It will just be taken from your shaking hand and used against you.
Gun ownership is a right but that doesn't mean everyone should have one. |

Getting a gun will only prove more hazardous than it would protect you. Instead try practicing safe living, lock your doors and windows at night. Look before opening the door to anyone, be aware when coming home late and alone. And if you feel you need something to protect yourself with something, get a knife or pepper spray and leave it under your bed. |

first off you both should sign up for a martial arts course. krav maga is excellent and is the martial art for the israeli army. who knows better about self preservation than israel??? learn yoga and meditation for self control. learn to observe what's going around you, stick together as much as possible. carry pepper spray. see what the laws are in your area for carrying tazers. you can always grab your keys so that you have them between your fingers and jab with them. keep your head, observe and stay together are the best things. try to make reliable friends who will have your backs. get to know the security guards in your building and the cops in your area. make friends with the people in your building you think would come help you of something happened. stay in touch with your families. peace!
PS: guns also come with baggage. gun control has done nothing to stop crime which is why when something happens they are all over the person with the gun to make an example of them even if they did the right thing and the shooter was the victim. a lot of times the system will care more about the person you shot even if you did it in self defense.use these non lethal options first. you need to know you can handle yourself without one first and when you do I bet you will be feeling like you wont need one, expecialy after that first time you save yourself.getting a gun should be a last resort. PEACE and be SAFE.. |

I agree with what deltafoxtrot said. First work on closing doors reliably, then worry about the responsibility of gun ownership. You could look into some non lethal defense tools (some are extremely effective), but since cities vary as to what is legal and what is not you should talk to someone in the city for information. |

That is a big responsibility, if you are to get a fire arm you have to no how to safely store it, fire it both on the range and under stress, you need a good storage system because what if you come home and the thief has your gun, you need to know how to clean it. You should definitely take a class that includes time on the range before you ever consider buying one. If you do go forward I would suggest a .357 revolver that has a handle that fits your hand well. I suggest this because they are less complicated, less can malfunction, the heavier weight will reduce the recoil into your hand, and you can use a .38 round which will also reduce recoil. |

Ummmm, well don't be a ditsy, dumb, broad and lock your doors. I lived in Baltimore, a.k.a. murder capitol of America, for all my life and never had a problem. If you respect the city and don't be a dumb ***. For example, don't walk around the city at night drunk yelling do you know where the A.T.M. machine is and just keep your wits about you and you will be fine.
But, if your worried about getting broken into as this can happen I wouldn't suggest getting a gun b/c whoever is breaking into your home is probably already too retarded to be afraid of a girl and a gun, plus if you do shoot them and they don't have a gun or a weapon you will be put in jail. In some states like one that comes to mind is Arizona, who has some of the most relaxed gun laws, you can use only equal force. For example, if some one comes at you with a knife and you do feel like your life is in danger you can only defend yourself with as much the person who is attacking you with so if he has a knife you can only defend yourself with a knife if he has nothing you can only defend yourself with your hands. On top of this you have to keep a lock on your gun, there are too many legalities surrounding guns. So, if you are worried about your place being broken into I would suggest getting a rottweiler or any kind of dog (not a chihuahua or anything around that size, you could get a collie and that would even work it doesn't have to be mean just a deterrent). It is a proven fact that a dog is your best security system. plus who wants to break into a place with a big dog ready to bight their head off. Theives look for easy opportunities not hard ones.
So, again if you are smart and don't become a target you should live a long happy life in the city just respect the cty and the city will respect you. Don't be a ditsy, dumb, broad! and lock your doors or get a dog! |

When your door is unlocked while you are asleep, a gun
won't help you should a burglar or other criminal enter
your rooms.
So a good advise: Always lock the door. Stick a big note
on the door: "Don't forget to lock it." |

I'll need some more information. USA or another country? If USA ... what state? Are you familiar with handguns or would this be your first expereience? Thinking of getting a carry permit, or leaving the weapon in the appt?
These are all important questions! Since you admit to not being careful about locking up ... planning to leave a gun in your appt is a bad idea, no matter what jurisdiction! Why give the bad guy a weapon to use on you?
To answer your question using the NY State laws I am most familiar with ....
Obtaining a pistol permit for self defense: difficult to impossible! Obtaining a concealed carry permit for self defense: Even closer to impossible.
Chance that you will actually hit your target without considerable firearms training and practice: 10% Chance of you hitting unintended persons and or valuables 40%. Chance of your weapon being used on you and/or your roommate (NYS - no carry permit): 50%.
Unless you are very familiar with weapons already and live in a "shall issue" permit state. Please consider a good, big dog! Difficult to use against you, hard as h*** to steal, and can turn away an invader with a good loud bark! German Shepards work good in this application, so do dobermans.
As an added benefit, your dog can (and should) become your "work out partner" .... your new buddy will need exercise and you will probably wind up taking up jogging.
Neither gun ownership or dog ownership should be entered into without deep thought! Get the advice of a trusted friend or family member (preferably both a dog owner and a gun owner).
If you DO decide to go with a gun. Get legal advice to know what paperwork you will need to fill out, and what constitutes a "justifiable use of deadly force" in your jurisdiction. Then practice, practice, practice! |

Friend,
you admit that you are not careful.First learn to be careful and take all precautions you should as all others in your position take.
Obtaining a weapon is not advisable as it will complicate the matters and so forget about the weapons.
There are so many security gadgets ,legally admitted to be fitted in your premises , to protect you if you need protection.
Have them. That way police can be informed if you really need help.
Take other precautions like training yourself in self protecting techniques under a licensed school. |

Yeah get two - one each - and get plenty of ammo, some knives, mace and perhaps a man trap or two- yeah get the place wired up with lethal levels of electricity. Then if you forget to turn anything off you might disturb your roomy and end up killing each other. |

1. lock your doors.
2. don't get a gun. it could potentially pose more of a problem having one then not ( for many of the reasons already stated). it takes a lot of good training at a shooting range and a lot of regular maintainace to ensure that the gun will work properly (i.e. cleaning it). it will be much easier to ensure you safety and the safety of your roomate if you just take normal precautions in the city... like locking the doors, calling the cops if you hear something suspicious in your building or in the alley, keeping pepper spray next to you etc. |

speaking as a gun owner...
1) don't get a gun unless you are willing to use it. you must have the guts to look some intruder in the face and pull the trigger. else you will just get it taken away like the ditzzes in the movies and turned on you.
2) you need to take firing lessons or go to the range so you can learn how to safely handle the gun and be familar with how to use it in a fast moving situation. you don't want to end up shooting yourself accidentally.
3) if the gun is kept in a box in the closet, it won't do you much good in an emergency situation. if you leave it in an accessible place it's subject to safety issues where a kid might get ahold of it or where it might get stolen (you leave your doors unlocked after all)
My suggestion to you is to act more carefully. Make it a habit to lock the door. Start by putting a large note on the outside of the door that says 'Please lock me' so you see it staring you in the face when you walk up. Check behind you before you unlock and open your apartment or your car that no one is waiting to bulldoze inside. Check your peep hole before you leave. Don't follow the same pattern from day to day. Leave a half hour early or late a couple days a week, take different transportation routes to get where you're going, etc... Sign up for self-defense classes and get a less damaging weapon like an alarm or pepper mace to carry on your key chain. Crime can happen outside your apartment as well as inside, do you plan to carry the gun on you all times? A gun is a serious weapon and should be treated as such. |

Why don't you just train yourselves to lock your doors???? Seems like a no brainer to me. Also if possible, get an alarm system and German Shepherd. Much safer than a gun that can get used on you. Chances are if you're not locking your door, the burglar will get in and find the gun and use it on YOU. |

If you go to a local gun shop you will get all your answers for your city/state. But you should really think about the pros and cons because getting a gun does not make you remember to lock the door. I think you need to invest in a alarm system. If you get a gun go to the shooting range and learn how to properly use a gun. My daughter just turned 12 by the grace of god. A gun that was stolen got into the hands of a 19 year kid who started a gun fight in my old neighborhood in broad day light and my daughter got shot 3 times in both legs and in her chest. She was 8 going on 9 and she almost died. I am pretty sure this lady thought her gun was going to protect her but she still was robbed and her safty almost killed my daughter. Now I am not against guns but I am for people learning all the facts before they get them and god forbid you get a gun get robbed and he gets the gun from you and uses it on you. Just be safe that is all I ask. I don't want to see others going through what me and my family suffered |
