Should over 70's be allowed to drive??????

If they can pass a standard driver exam, yes. I have a colleague, age 74(!), who still runs his own pickups and deliveries for his company. The man's got a whack of speeding tickets, but then again so does my boyfriend who is in his thirties.

In Ontario, where I live, drivers who reach the age of 80 are given a knowledge test, which, while I agree with that, I think falls short of the benefits to be had by a road test. Everybody knows what certain traffic signs mean, but not everybody knows to check their mirrors constantly or not drive 30mph UNDER the speed limit on the highway.

Sure. Now, should idiots under 30 who are married to their cell phones be allowed to drive?

I think everyone should be required to retest every few years (maybe every 8 years?) to keep their license, not just over 70's. There are a lot of people in their 30's and 40's that seem to forget how to drive. Lane changes without signals, just tapping their brakes at a stop sign, and so on. Maybe retesting will "remind" them how to drive properly. But, in reality, it probably will make no difference.

Sure, then you can raise the driving age to 25. Statistically, younger drivers are responsible for more infractions and accidents. It has more to do with a driver's ability than it does with age.

If they pass the medical & are allowed to keep their licence why not. The under 21's cause more accidents, I think the age to drive should be raised to 21.

Here we go again. I am in my sixties and have never had an accident in thirty-nine years. I recently had my car written off by a young woman who careered into the back of me whilst I was turning right. I have both police and witness statements to say that there was no fault on my part. Leave elderly people alone until they prove that they are incompetent as individuals. I have a need for a car because I am partially disabled.

If they took all the uninsured drivers off the road first, oh! sorry can't do that., they may be Labour voters; then take out all the unlicensed cars and MOT failures there would be much more room for normal people to drive.
My 79 year old neighbour pays £270 a year fully comprehensive for his car insurance, his grandson with a similar make of car and who passed the driving test 15 months ago has to pay £1475 a year. Now the insurance companies know the risk factors precisely, so you can judge who the safest drivers are

i live near an oap home and every day i see these guys trying to pull out onto a main rd what they doo is wait and wait and wait for a gap then they pull out but acelirate sooo slowly that the traffic doing 60 mph has caught them up and nealy smashed into the back of them, i've seen them turning without a signal. going the wrong way around the roundabout and much more,
i think at the age of 68-70 a test shoukd be carried out wich includes an eye test .

No and also anyone under the age of 24.

70 year olds can be dangerous but the boy racers are the biggest problem. Especially with their terrible taste in music blasting to the masses from their car. Why promote the fact that you have no musical taste?

Your ability to drive does not depend on your age but the brain matter contained in your skull !!

I agree I think every when your license expires you should have to go through a whole new driving test

A curious question as the retirement age for employees is gradually creeping up. Soon retirement age will be 70 and possibly older so banning over 70's from driving would be discriminatory (employment rights). I suspect, especially in UK, that people are far more healthy at that age now than used to be the case. I'd probably support retesting at age 80 instead.

GAVIN E
I think that it is stupid that people do not have to be retested between the ages of 17 and 70.

I am not talking about the age, but anything can happen to anyone of any age. For example, their sight deteriorating, or any other health issues.

I seriously think this needs looking at.

Should under-21's be allowed to drive? Which group do you think has the higher accident rate?
Hint: under-21's have higher insurance rates.

KittensForBreakfast
No!

Yes most of them are far safer on the roads than boy racers even insurance companies recognise this that is why their insurance is lower than the under 25s.
