In a modern civilised country there is no justificatioin for the death penalty. Two wrongs do not make a right. I am from England and I suspect that if a referendum was held the majority would be in favour of restoring the death penalty but what happens if you execute the wrong person - you cannot bring that person back. People will argue that with things like DNA testing the chances of making a mistake are remote. Mistakes could still happen. However I would like to see in this country people serving their full sentence. If life is given it should mean life and not say 15 years. People's obsession with the death penalty is just the need for revenge. |

Actually I would like to see the appeal process shortened on the death penalty's. They are staying to long in jail. I agree with Appeals but there are way too too many chances.
Our country is different that everyone else in the world and I like that quality about us. I don't see people sneaking over the border in masses to get into say...Russia. We are doing just fine. |

Any civilized society abolishes the death penalty. All a death penalty does is say that it's sometimes perfectly fine to deliberately kill others, which is exactly the logic that leads to death penalty behavior in the first place. It's as illogical as hitting children to teach them hitting is wrong.
Even worse, innocent people are frequently sentenced to death and even executed by mistake. Getting off on a death penalty case depends more on the kind of lawyers you can afford than whether you are guilty or not.
It amazes me how many so-called Christians are so in favor of a death penalty,. Given how he died, I suspect Jesus had a radically different opinion. |

That's totally inaccurate! The death penalty remains intact in many countries especially third world!
Why or why not depends on who you ask- an average joe or a born again christian!
For me, if your a useless individual that has total disrespect for the life of others than I say to you- Bon Voyage'!! |

Yes, with one exception! Multiple murderers, serial killers and those who murder that are psychopaths should be executed! They are not safe in jail, or outside of jail! They have no conscience!! |

I don't think that the death penalty should be abolished, but I DO think that the way it is applied needs to be totally changed.
I would make a capital trial enormously expensive and absolutely insure that the defendant has excellent representation and resources for defense.
In short, I would change the process such that by the time the few people that made it to execution the only open question would be a philosophical one: Do you agree with putting someone to death? ALL the procedural problems MUST be dealt with, otherwise we are the barbarians they say we are |

Yes. I think that one person does not have the authority to kill another person. I also think that a serial killer should have to sit in a horrible place (jail) for many many years and live with the horrible things that they did. They deserve it. |

I've heard it said that it costs more to put someone to death than to keep them in prison for life. And personally, I haven't seen any real evidence that the death penalty really deters criminals at all. That being said, from the POV of a family who is at their child's killer's trial, I could definitely sympathize with them wanting to see that individual killed. Retaliation isn't a pretty motive, but it is a very human one. I'd like to see us move away from it as a nation, personally... |

yes it should be here in california we have the most people on death row why because we dont use it it would cost us tax payers less if we did not have it no appeals plus its a lot worse to be in prison for 10 20 30 plus years than to get it all over with a lot of those guys on death row would still be in protective coustdy in a cell 23 plus hours a day little or no humane contact so whats worse |

Yes, of course, The whole penal system should be revamped for that matter. We currently lock up hundreds of young black and Latino men. Why? Because they are inherently bad? No, because we are trying to deal with deep social problems through force. Never has worked. Never will. And official murder is just the tip of that sad cultural iceberg. |
