Should the london police face prosecution for defending themselves during G20 trouble?

They employed the tactics they are trained to use,i.e no head shots with batons, only hit around the legs etc etc.if people weren't breaking the law the police wouldn't of hit them.its annoying that no one has mentioned the fact that a police officer in just a peak hat was savagely smashed over the head with a pole and knocked to the ground.any comments/comebacks welcome.im pretty sick of the lazy unwashed of this country being treated as victims! Additional Details thx oh golly, nice write up.macp, are u one of the lazy unwashed by any chance?u were likely in london at the "peaceful" protest, lighting fires, smashing windows, abusing policemen who have better things to do like proper crime fighting.i didnt mention the newspaper vendor for a reason,to provoke debate.most of the video footage is negative to police/positive to the "vicitms".

I agree people are always to quick to criticise the police in this country. and tend to forget what the police are like in other country's. the woman that claimed to being hit by a police officer. admitted that she had previously pushed the a said officer. in so many other country's this would be regarded as assault on a police officer. as many i have seen the video of that incident. and you can clearly see that the officer isn't even looking at her when the back of his hand touches her.
in other words he's just waving his arm around to indicate to the crowed to move back. and she just steps forward in to his space so to speak. so it wasn't really his fault but hers. so saying i would say the whole incident was of her own making. yes there are incidents that happen like with the guy that died. that are regrettable and need looking in to.
But I have lived in many different country's and can say we have one of the best police force's in the world. are they perfect no. but no one is. can they improve yes of course they can. but i would much prefer to have a british police officer confront me that one from many other police force's. |

I have sympathy for the Police, BUT I feel we need to wait for the outcome of the investigation. IF the Police officer used excess OR unreasonable force he should be prosecuted. |

Hey Cisco

All of the videos that i have seen show the police as the aggressors. If beating innocent bystanders and women is part of the training then the training needs to be reviewed. |

No way! These rabbles are out to provoke our law-keepers and disrupt our way of life, which is to live peaceably and obey the laws of the land. It's time the silent majority spoke out to defend our law-men/women. All these "unwashed" are out to do, as we are now seeing, is to get involved in some "incident" and make some money from the (global) media. "Anti-globalization" indeed! What hypocrisy.
BTW, it's time our officers cracked down on the Tamil rabbles who are disrupting our British way of life by blocking streets and causing mayhem. What a waste of our time and precious resources. Let them go back to Tamil Nadu. No doubt they will be claiming compensation for "police harassment". |

fatmedic you are bound to get responses from the great unwashed of this country with a question like that and if you intended to get them to rant and make themselves look puerile then you have achieved it. Well done! They can't resist the bait can they? |

Only Mark.

I hope you don't mean the poor guy (Ian Tomlinson) who was on his way home from work when savagely attacked by a thug of a man on a power trip.
Just because people have power over other doesn't mean they should use it and abuse it. |

Defending themselves!!!!????? Are you completely mad? Mr Tomlinson was a newspaper vendor. Nicola was a defenseless woman, slapped across the chops and then beaten. These fascist ,gestapo pigs must be put on trial and they must tell us who teaches them these despicable Nazi tactics so we can try them as well. What the hell was Churchill thinking-fighting the Nazis, we are ruled by them now anyhow. What a tragic loss of life to sacrifice to only find ourselves being oppressed by the Nu Labour Fascist Regime. What will be next-sending we who disagree to the incinerators!!This is Britain. We do not tolerate this sort of behaviour from anyone let alone our own police service and government. |

you say that the police would not have used force against anyone if they were not breaking the law--are you stupid or just naive the police in the miners strike in Uk the poll tax riots etc used excessive force unnecessary arrests were made and they made a great deal of money in overtime and expenses and bragged how much they beat miners etc please trust me I know I worked with them -some were so high on adrenalin they took their powers to the max some even got off on it.
I agree that most officers did their job professionally and I agree with you that some marchers were trouble makers but how dare you suggest that the majority of these marchers were anything other than decent concerned hard working people carrying out their basic human rights. If you are a woman just remember the suffragettes if they had not marched some using heavy tactics you would not have the vote, remember Hitler if people hadn't not just fought but had marched against a regime so abhorrent you would not have the freedom to spout such crap.I can only assume that you are a fool who knows nothing about the real police service the fact they changed that name they were previously police force shows then they wanted to portray a group of professional decent men and women but this is not the case yes most are however the service also represents society there are some bullies and dishonest people working within the service if everyone held your blinded view they would be free do do just as they liked and then believe me you would change your mind, these scum--the police who think they are above the law of the UK must be brought to justice and we must weed them out for the sake of us and those who do their job properly.
Remember the case of Charles de Menzies not one officer was held responsible the same in cover up will be afforded the thug in uniform who flung Ian Tomlinson across the pavement in an unprovoked attack on a man who walked with his back to the police and had his hands in his pocket -Hardly a threat this was manslaughter -the officer must appear before a court had the man done this to a police officer other PCs would have pounced on him and handcuffed him and thrown him in a van not just stood by and allowing their "colleague "to carry out such a viscous cowardly attack now an officer has slapped a woman and beaten her with a baton is this right NO IT IS NOT look at countries abroad do you want a police force like theirs where you will not be free--this is the way to get it allow these people to be above the law we will not have the police service in which I was proud to serve. For the sake of society and the service which is there to serve a decent society lets get the officers who are not fit to serve OUT!!Most men and women who are in the service are a credit to their uniform and I thank the m and respect them for their sakes GET THESE bullies and lawbreakers out there is no place for them amongst the good cops.to answer your Q YES they should face prosecution they were NOT defending you me or themselves you should get real |
