It has nothing to do with who he was...it was away to get another day off with pay for the government workers. Unless you work for the government, you don't get payed for the day off, and most people don't even get the day off. JUST ANOTHER RIP OFF on us common folk,s.

King said alot that needed to be said. But he was not the only one saying it. There were alot of other black preachers that were preaching the same thing. It's just that the media gave him the coverage. So...no...he does not deservet to have a 'day off' day in his name alone. It's not a 'holiday' because he was not holy. It should really be called something else. That would be another good question. It also goes to show how much power the media has over us. Who else will the media dedicate a holiday for?

Your fault but I don't disagree with you completely.

Government agencies do take too many holidays. Look no further than the number of "school days" sacrificed for a "celebration" of some sort.

I say they acknowledge "whoever" -- maybe study them for the day and get on with reality -- people have responsibilities and there's work to be done.

And yes, you'll end up paying for an extra day at the impound...BS. It's a major inconvenience for the very people who pay for the service in the first place.

Advice? Don't have your car impounded.

Nope- holidays are inconvenient unless you are rich as hell. In which case, it doesnt matter. Today shouldn't be a holiday- i dont care what people think- somebody's bday is not important enough to have a whole day off for. Its totally inconvenient to those of us who cant afford to have lost that entire day for no good reason.

I think there are 4 federal holidays that should be work days... this one, Columbus Day, President's Day and Labor Day.

Veteran's Day and Memorial Day should be recognized until the end of time.

Congress at the time voted on it....Actually his birthday was the 15...he did not choose for it to be celebrated on the wrong day....next time don't let your car get impounded...that is no ones fault but your own.

LMAO!! Yes, I agree that MLK Day should be a national holiday just like Veterans Day, Flag Day and Columbus Day. And that is exactly what it is. Banks and government offices are closed, but other businesses generally do not.

If you want the country to celebrate your birthday, then get off your whiney butt and do something special.

Well it make sense. At least it isn't one of those holidays that give Americans an excuse to drink. Every time we add a new holiday, it turns into a drunk fest on that day. Like St. Patrick's Day = National Get Crunk Day. If you aren't Irish, don't celebrate it.
