Should we abolish lethal injections and go back to the electric chair ?

brat
I think that the death penalty is unnecessary in the 1st place. Many countries have done away with it so why not America also?

I don't think it matters one way or the other. If a person is not deterred by lethal injection, he/she isn't going to be deterred by the added discomfort afforded by the electric chair.

public executions work a lot better, injections is just too friendly and teaches youth nothing. electric anything is too near cooking

We used to cut people into four parts and then mount their head on a spike for all to see. Executions for effect are not only barbaric, they don't have the desired result. Instead of persuading the population to get in line or else, it has been clearly shown that if the state kills, especially in a harsh way, it sends a message all the way through society that killing is an acceptable way to handle problems. If a society wishes to become less violent, then its public policy needs to be that as well, for those who are the most violent are usually imitating, or following "the leader."

how about tying child rapists to a telephone pole in the middle of town. i think that would be a lot better . anything goes

Either one is good enough to make people die.

Vaughn
No--electric chairs are significantly less humane. The point isn't supposed to be to gloat over the violence level of the execution. The point is supposed to be to stop a violent criminal. Aren't we suppose to be better than him?

ideamanbmg
Injections are too humane. Give them the chair! SPAR-KY! SPAR-KY! They deserve to FRY!

crusty old fart
Absolutely!

In fact, bring back hanging. The argument against the death penalty is that it is no deterrent. It should be presented as a punishment for a heinous crime, not a deterrent. Hell should be the deterrent.

I read through all the answers, and I just can't help myself to give my two cents on the subject.....It is so obvoius to see what's one main problem with this country: victims have no rights! Why are we wasting our time figuring out which is the more humane way to execute a criminal??????? Did he/she, at any time, give a s h i t about what would be the more humane way to rape, sodomize, kill, dismember the victim??? Why should we??? Why are we always thinking, and protecting a perpetrator's rights????? What about the victim's, and those he/she left behind, rights??? This is so wrong!
People judge other country's legal system, as i.e. a rapist gets it cut off in the middle of a public square for all to see.......most say" bad, inhumane system"........guess what? That SOB will never rape again! Someone caught stealing......gets his/her hands cut off...........won't steal again! In this country people who commit crimes, they either pay their way out, or they only have to serve a third of the time given, and when they're in prison, they get a minimum of 2,200 calories a day, heat in the winter, air conditioning in the summer, all accomodies, and free college education, so when they'll get out, they're lawyers, doctors, preachers, etc., or if they are in death row, they'll stay there for 20, 30+ years, at an average cost of $80,000 per inmate, of tax payers money, while figuring out in what other ways they can screw this country out of it.
Eye for an eye.....it's even written in the bible for those of you religion fanatics, whom only uses it when it's of convinience. It has nothing to do with playing God, but it has all to do with those poor victims, and their ruined families, and protecting ourselves.
I don't care how it's done, just lets get it done!

no... I think if we made the punishments a little harsher... it may actually deter people from killing one another...
hanging for example... even though it is still legal in a few states... it never happens... can you imagine what would happen if they use hanging as capital punishment in the US... some people would either work hard to not get caught... or work hard not to kill other people..

macho_bob
we could save boatloads of money by just doing a good ol' fashioned hanging or use the guillotine. :D

I think we should abolish both. What good comes out of fryin some1 or giving some1 an overdose of drugs? Nothing really. How are we better than they if we do that? We're not then. All we're doing is having the prosecuters take revenge instead of justice. How is killing someone justice? Anyway though, the lethal ingection is less painful and you don't have a burning sensation when it happens.

No. If anything, we should abolish the death penalty. No one is beyond reform.

No.
I believe the person who is going to die should have the right to elect their method however. Death by hanging, death by injection, death by electric chair, beheading etc. Some may have a perferred choice but always have a default order in case they try to opted out.

And I do not agree - EVERYONE can NOT be reformed. Some people are just evil and a burden to the rest of us..

You know, its kinda funny that MURDER is ILLEGAL, but the government feels they can take it upon themselves to kill someone. What right do they have. But to answer your question, NEITHER. I if the government feels it is right to kill someone, then they should be killed the same way they killed someone else. If they shot someone in the head then dismembered their body, they should be killed the same way.

kill the person in the same manner they killed

example you shoot somebody point blank in the face with a shotgun you get shot in the face point blank with a shot gun

The death penalty should never be abolished, but at the same time not used as a tool of revenge. It needs to be made quicker and more humane......something along the lines of nitrogen asphyxiation. It it absolutely painless, quick and irreversible. The electric chair is way too inhumane, as is hanging, firing squad, the gas chamber and using lethal chemicals like hydrogen cyanide. If you have committed a crime against humanity so serious and heinous, the death penalty is the only option that should be given. Make it quick, make it painless and move on.

Katykins
I do not think is is our job to decide whether another person dies, no matter what the means. Put the person to life in prison and let God decide when he/she dies. And the jails need to be downgraded alot also. These people are in there for punishment, not a life of relative luxury--The do not need our tax money to be wasted on TV's, A/C, and such. Give them a basic cell with a bed, toilet and sink, simple food, and a bible.

I actually think that lethal injections are a little more humane. I sure wouldn't want to get fried. I'd rather be overdosed.
