No.

Visit DC sometime and you'll get a sense of where the founding fathers were spiritually.

We have fallen so far........

There are so many other compelling issues facing our country right now that it would not be worth the effort. It would just create another trivial rallying cry among social conservatives and deflect attention from the multiple failures of the Bush administration like the wars in Iraq and Afganistan, national deficit, political corruption, violations of human rights (torture, wire tapping), and dismantling of environmental laws, to name a few.

No way,What is it with you people?there are more urgent problems in this country and you worry about a writing on a coin,it's been there for centuries,it never bother anybody,it has'nt hurt anyone, the ACLU and their out of touch lawyers are turning everyone in this country against each other for things that don't make sense,if you don't like what it says, exchange your money for foreign pesos.

No it's part of our history

Although the country was founded on principals of Common Law with an intent to separate religion from government to protect religion (among other things), having this phrase on the money is more of cultural historical significance than one of religion. I say (as an Atheist) that it does no harm to have it on the money.

I'm not religious but I still say no we shouldn't; it's just pointless and it would cost a lot of money; and afterall, how often do you actually read your quarters?

That wouldn't bother me, but it also doesn't bother me that it's there. Frankly, I don't think people really notice it, nor does it have any magical powers over us if we do. It's just "there."

no i don't think that we should. they say its a violation af religion. but why must we bend to the wants of the athiests out there? every religion has a god that they believe in so it fits for 90% of the population. why must we spend so much to change the money for the 10% that have a problem withit. if you ask me they're being selfish.

Sure, but don't try it at home. It will take you years, and you probably won't get through all that many quarters.

I'm a liberal Democrat - no, probably a lot more liberal than any Democrats these days. And I believe in the separation of church & state as a noble and absolutely necessary goal. I'm not religious myself, not even spiritual.

I have to say, honestly, that the motto doesn't bother me. I can't judge its offensiveness to others, but for some odd reason it doesn't make a blip on my radar screen. It feels like a kind of historical artifact rather than a statement of national religion.

It's odd that one doesn't hear it discussed more often, though.

Good question.

Better to ask "should this really be subject to a popular opinion vote instead of a question of Constitutional law?"

The whole point of having a Constitution is so that certain rights aren't taken away by one or another narrow-minded special interest group who happens to have a temporary majority. So instead ask if using the word "God" on currency really blurs the line between church and state, or if it denies religious freedom to anyone, including those who choose not to believe in God.

One way to test this is to exaggerate the issue and see what reaction it provokes. Suppose instead of "in God we trust" the current said "in Allah we trust"? Would that be unconstitutional? And so on from there.

It seems a pretty cut-and-dried question to me, but then again, there's a lot of law out there that steps lightly around the bare toes of populist tradition.
