My dad and I are both white and we both love chicken so we thought why not take advantage of the deal that Popeye's Chicken and Biscuits had on 4/22/09. It was 8 pcs. of chicken for $5 so we figured why not? Okay, so we drive for about 20 mins to get to the closest one (in the rain in a car with no wipers) and we go up to the door, but it's locked. We were thinking, why do they lock the door, it's only 8:30 pm and they close at midnight? This is Popeye's by the way so we're like a minority there because almost everyone that eats there is black. We look inside through a window and there is a huge line of just black people waiting to order. We were about to go to the other door around the side of the building when another family of black people come to get inside. By the time they get there another family is leaving so they unlocked the door to let them in. We were right there with them and got inside. So my dad and I entered at the exact same time as these other black people. My dad and I got in line and like 5 secs after this big black man behind the counter points at me and my dad and say's, "You two!" then we looked at him as if to say, "What?" He then says, "Get out!" My dad and I looked at each other, surprised! He clearly saw the other black people come in, but decided not to do anything about them. Instead he decided to be a douche and throw the only white people in the restaurant out. My dad and I were outraged, but left because we didn't want to start anything. Also, as we were leaving I heard laughing coming from the restaurant. I was humiliated! Now we're contemplating sueing Popeye's for racial treatment. What do you guys think we should do?

Wow, I would be really upset also. I would contact their corporate office ASAP and tell them what happened. I wouldn't even try talking to a manager at the store because they would give you excuses. Corporate should know what is going on at that store otherwise they will continue to lose customers. If you get no response, contact the media. They would then be forced to respond and their poor treatment of customers would be exposed. I don't think you should sue though. It would be very hard to prove in court. |

I would write to Popeye's and threaten to sue. If they see that you are going to do something, maybe they'll pay you or something to get you not to sue. |

I think you should go back and talk to the owner and explain what happened and see what he says. And get him to assure you it won't happen again. |

Do you have anything to take to court?
What do you hope to get? The $5 worth of chicken? Because there's no money value on "humiliation".
Probably not.
If it was me, I'd send a nasty letter to the corporate offices of Popeyes. Maybe they'll give you coupons for free chicken. Then you're up the $5. |

You explained your case very well, but remember that your witnesses are not going to take your side, you have to think reality here. Unless they provide a copy of their tape from their security cameras, everything was probably recorded, but will they provide that? You can always consult with an attorney or call your local newspaper. That was not right at all. Did you check if anymore people went in after that last family?

You could but it's very possible that you would have to pay a lawyer by the hour. I'd write a letter to Popeye's corporate headquarters - to the president of the company and lay out your complaint. At the very least, you should get an apology and some free food. |
