well his mum should have gotten him counselling not had him arrested, as for the cops telling the school that's truly overkill, at the most he needs to be on medication, not kicked out of school. if the person in question had no guns or other weapons and was just venting . |

That is ridiculous. If he was asked to write a short 'story' then the implication is that it is FICTIONAL.
The school in question should be ashamed of being so censorious to the detriment of one of it's pupils. That kid has been badly let down by the school, his mother and by the police. |

if the mom called the cops then she must think her own kid is trouble and keeping him out of school is probably a good idea until they can figure out what the kids issues are. |

That depends. If it's just a short story, then no. If it's another clue to a pattern of behavior he has displayed that makes one wonder whether he really wants to do a school shooting, then maybe. There have been a lot of school shootings in America the past 10 years, and when it's children's lives on the line, the risk isn't worth it. |

Sounds like an urban myth to me.
I agree the school and police might take an interest in the matter, but once investigating, the story itself wasn't the reason he got expelled, if he did.
It was because he was found to have deeper underlying problems that led to the writing of the story, and he may have threatened the school during interrogation.
Otherwise my BS meter went sky high reading this. |

Stupidity is NOT a handicap

No I don't think it should warrent expulsions as it clearly violates his first amendment right. Unless he actually threated to shoot up the school himself he should be granted his basic rights underthe first amendment which also gaurentees FREEDOM OF PRESS (which of course is the written word).
I would suggest someone take some legal action against the school. |
|

Your name here, cheap.
 |
I would say no, but in this day and age if the kid was so stupid as to write such a thing, maybe he deserved what he got.
Old saying, if you can think it, you can do it. |

is he a screw up? if his mom called the police he must be, maybe he'll get some help and be a contributing member of society instead of a screw up. |

That seems a little harsh... unless it was clearer related to the school. Maybe he was worried about a school shooting and put his thoughts on paper to ease himself. We're missing a bit of information here but it seems pretty crazy. |

good for Mom; a very difficult decision. short stories are the fuel of a young writer. unfortunately they are also a prelude to some horrible plan. I would hope the school looked into the bigger picture, and hope some one checks the kids mental health. he may just be a budding writer, or he may be a future killer. |

If mom called the cops, she thought it was more than a story. I think they should have taken a different approach maybe, but I have no problem with expulsion unless the storyteller was really an innocent fiction writer and the authorities freaked out.
If this story had been found laying around by someone who wasn't intimate with the writer, I'd be going on about the author's free speech rights and so on. But when a mother calls the cops on her kid, she usually thinks that this is the last resort--get your kid in a little trouble now so he won't get in a lot of trouble later.
If the mother were standing around talking about how good a kid he is and how he writes stories all the time, I'd suggest the mom sue the school or appeal to lift the suspension, for violating his free speech rights.
Now that you've posted the story and said that the kid is really a writer, you are making me wonder why the mother would call the cops on her kid. I'm still convinced someone is nuts, but now I'm not sure whether it is the kid or the mother. |

you are just writing a short story so you won't want to not use names. use only first names. put at the beginning of the story that it is entirely fictional. that's my advice. |

Yip. Apparently it wasnt a story, it was a plan.
However if it were a report about another school shooting, then no expulsion required, but it wasnt cause it made the news all the way here in New Zealand. |

Yep. In this day and age, that kid should've used a little more common sense. And if his mom was worried.... trust his mom. |
