Smoking in the street should it be banned??
|
I walk children everywhere rather than take the car to be healthy but we often get lungfuls of cigarette smoke. do you think it should be banned unless in private property?? Additional Details Ah but these days driving is a necessity, smoking is definately not.

No. How often do you actually confront these puffs of smoke. Probably not nearly as much as the fumes from the cars going up and down the street. Those are more harmful than the occasional exposure to the smoke. Should we ban cars next? |

NO. Leave me alone.
It is outside. That is for EVERYONE!
I am sorry you get a lung full of smoke.
What if I find your perfume repugnant...will you stop wearing it? No. You would tell me to ____ off.
We have given in to all you anti-smokers. No more in restaurants, no more in bars...now outside...hell no. I will just have to pay the fine on that.
Further. Private property...all property is private property unless it is government owned. SO, using your logic, if I were standing on the off the sidewalk on a downtown street, I would be on private property. Which would still be outside. Do you understand what private property is? Maybe what you ment to say was smoking should be only allowed in the confines of one's home. Try getting that to stick. |

GRRRRRRR, absolutely not, when you're walking along with your kids, getting under every ones feet WITHOUT apologising, do you ever think about taking them out when it's not so busy....
As an asides to Yahoo Answers, for subjects like this they should provide a Yahoo Arguments forum lol |

no, if you stop smoking in the street, you would have to stop car, trucks, and public transport as well because they polute the air more than anything else, and also aircraft when they dispose their excess fuel before landing. |

You get lungfuls of cigarette smoke! How bleeding tall are you or the kids!
Last time I looked, the smoke from my cigarette was going straight up! It's got to obey the laws of physics! You'd have to stand in the middle of a very large group of people smaller than you to breathe in a lungful! At least get the science right! Or don't they teach it in school anymore? How much passive smoking especially outside do you think it takes to harm YOUR health! If you don't like the smell (which is all you are getting) then I'm sorry but I might not like yours too much either!
Sorry about the Emissions from my car though, the bleeding exhaust is too low! I don't always have the choice to walk and we've got a crap bus service!
I'm in favour of the ban inside public buildings but attitudes like this are ridiculous and slightly paranoid. |

Ok you walk, with children and the only thing you can think is going into your lungs is cigarette smoke? Get over yourself!
One has to ask are you that out of shape or are you screaming that much? The answer is no, never.
Take away one right and eventually the rest will follow. Look at the patriot act... no need to say more.
Lets take away the alcohol, beer, xanax, oxycodone, and other drugs as these are harmful and are abused in one way or another. However, I do not see you proposing taking these items away or making them illegal... are you? No I thought not.
I know what bandwagon would you like to jump on next? Maybe make all fat people stay indoors until all in shape people can't see them???? |

Has there ever been an issue that someone had a health issue because of second hand smoke outside? In a house, is another issue. What happens if you set that ban in motion? Then if someone smokes in their yard and a neighbor complains, then they won't be able to smoke on their own private property! I doubt they get a lungful of cigarette smoke, the smell isn't so nice, but neither is a skunk. Should we ban them from the outside, as well? |

I say no. I am a smoker who has the common courtesy to stay away from children or crowded places when I do have a smoke. There are some out there that simply don't care and smoke where they wish. If you see a cloud of smoke, simply just avoid it if you are concerned about your health. |

No way!!!! In Ireland we cant smoke anywhere indoors apart from your own house.all the smokers are like lepers out on the streets.this time of year when its really cold you see the real devoted smokers standing outside in the snow and rain. so please please give us a break we'll die of pneumonia from the cold quicker!!! |

NO. Aren't you being a bit hypercritical??????? You walk your children everywhere to be healthy? You get lungfuls of cigarette smoke? You also get lungfuls of other car drivers pollutants, such as.........................
short list of the likely pathogens in car exhaust:
Carbon Monoxide
Nitrogen dioxide
Sulphur dioxide
Suspended particles including PM-10, particles less than 10 microns in size.
Benzene
Formaldehyde
Polycyclic hydrocarbons
Blood perfuses all of the body's organs and can carry toxic substances as well as beneficial substances, such as oxygen, to them. Air pollution is the source of many materials that may enter the human bloodstream through the nose, mouth, skin, and the digestive tract. Chemicals known to be harmful, such as benzene, lead and other heavy metals, carbon monoxide, volatile nitrites, pesticides, and herbicides. These substances have been shown to produce harmful effects on the blood, bone marrow, spleen, and lymph nodes. Blood cells are constantly undergoing turnover, with new blood cells entering the circulation as mature cells are lost, making the blood system especially vulnerable to environmental poisoning. For example, lead interferes with normal red blood cell formation by inhibiting important enzymes. In addition, lead damages red blood cell membranes and interferes with cell metabolism in a way that shortens the survival of each individual cell. Each of these harmful effects can result in clinical anemia.
Benzene and other less known hydrocarbons are produced in petroleum refining, and are widely used as solvents and as materials in the production of various industrial products and pesticides. Benzene also is found in gasoline and in cigarette smoke. It has been shown that exposure to benzene is related to the development of leukemia and lymphoma. Benzene has a suppressive effect on bone marrow and it impairs blood cell maturation and amplification. Benzene exposure may result in a diminished number of blood cells (cytopenia) or total bone marrow loss. A number of metabolites appear to be involved in this process, and there may be several targets of toxicity, including stem, progenitor, and some stromal cells.
Common air pollutants also have an affect on blood and thus on organs of the body. For example, carbon monoxide, arising from incomplete combustion of carbonaceous materials, binds to the hemoglobin over two hundred times more avidly than oxygen and distorts the release to the tissues of any remaining oxygen. Thus, CO poisoning is akin to suffocation. In addition, it has been observed that carbon monoxide can exacerbate cardiovascular disease in humans. So why not ask EVERY CAR DRIVER to STOP driving their car?????????????????????????? |

No, until the government decide to ban smoking for good and can afford to fund the NHS without the billions of £s smokers contribute in tax on cigarettes then I'm sorry but NO!
P.S. Driving isn't a necessity unless you're a lazy so and so. |

No-If they did then they would also have to ban exhaust from trucks and cars, people wearing way too much perfume or colonge, people with horrible body odor, and the factories that blow out toxic chemicals everyday. |

No, of course not!!!
If every selfish person managed to ban whatever they didn't enjoy, annoyed them or they feared, nobody would ever go out. |

I have seen a few answers blaming liberals for wanting to restrict smoking. Aren't the smoker as much to blame for restrictions for not policing themselves better? Maybe if smokers showed better courtesy and etiquette, there would not be as much of a battle. |

The passive smoking argument is massively exaggerated, and I am talking about indoors, in pubs. If you are SERIOUSLY worried about smoking in the street, then you are a hypochondriac, and extremely naive and gullible.
How do you manage to get lung-fulls of smoke in the outdoors, and isn't car exhaust fumes far worse. You accuse people of being nasty, but you are being intolerant in the extreme. Of course people are going to attack you. Your attitude is beyond belief.
No, you have to be winding us up. |

Now now, I can appreciate your concern for your health and your kids---but there are more harmful pollutants that are invisible in our atmosphere than cigarette smoke. You are more than welcome to walk down the street with oxygen masks---I won't make an issue out of it! Can you tell that I am a smoker---it is part of my religion---but I don't believe in throwing my butts on the ground. |

YES it should be banned. Clearly everyone responding to this post is a smoker and does not understand how their habit affects the rest of us. Yes, it is very possible to get a lungful of smoke, and no you smoke does not simply rise upwards and away from everyone. I have to hold my breath for the majority of my walk to work. I think that smoking near anyone is probably the rudest thing you can do as you're forcing me to inhale harmful smoke. Other pollutions are irrelevant to this conversation as we are focusing on a very different and very selfish issue. |
