Smoking will be banned in public places: what counts as public place?

Well if you OWN the restraunt, and have a deed with your name on it, it's not PUBLIC and therefore the OWNER OF THE LAND and Building should judge for themselves whether to allow smoking or not.
Try telling me I cannot smoke in my car or home I pay for. I will F someone up.l

For the moment (around here), it's any workplace, restaurant, bar, mall, movie theater lobby etc... where the public congregates indoors. You can have smoking areas outside but they must be a certain number of feet from the entrance to a building, and can only have two covered areas, so you can have 2 walls or one wall and a roof (how you'd do THAT is beyond me).

I don't smoke, but even I think it's gone way overboard to ban smoking in bars. Eating establishments and family areas...fine, but bars? My husband DJ's and the last few times I've gone with him, I've noticed that literally...over 90% of the patrons smoke. Now, people will be pushed outdoors to smoke, and they'll throw the butts on the ground...which only causes another issue. If they're going to ban it, I think they could at LEAST give those who smoke, a sheltered area to do it in.

Any establishment that employes a person. for a non smoker this is a fantastic law. i live in Ireland and we were the first country to enforce this law. now i can take my daughter to a restaurant and enjoy our meal

As someone else said, it will depend on what the law in each state ends up defining as a "public place", but a TRUE "public place" is one that is paid for with your tax dollars, like a courthouse, a city park, a county hospital, a public school, etc.

A restaurant, a car dealership, a bookstore, and such places are not truly "public" in the way that people think they are because they are PRIVATELY owned.

any enclosed building for the public inc taxis an bus. this also applys if you work from home!

Any bar ,resteruant,club,store etc..Its been like that in NYC for a few years already.

In NY we have a smoking ban, that is any inclosed public area ... including stores, resturants, bars, sport stadiums etc ... basically anywhere ... you have to smoke outside

I know in my state smoking is banned in public places---these include; restaurants, bars, malls, schools, airports (some have designated rooms). In NJ you can still smoke in the casinos

I've actually read the stuff on this and generally speaking....it's anywhere with a roof and 4 walls. And there's going to be Smoking Police. This country's really got it's priorities right, eh?

They're banned in public places where i'm from and i HATE it. It's not fair. They used to have glass walls in public places but then they took them out. They're banned in restaraunts, bars, bingo halls, casino's. Anywhere inside where there's public.

Matters on the exact law. Some laws allow you to smoke on the streets, but not in food places, bars, etc. Others do not allow even this. They want you to smoke only in your own house, apt, car, etc.
