Under the law, the following actions are prohibited:
Publicly post or publicly display in any manner an individualâ€™s SSN. â€œPublicly postâ€ or â€œpublicly displayâ€ means to intentionally communicate or otherwise make available to the general public.
Print an individualâ€™s SSN on any card required for the individual to access products or services provided by the person or entity.
Require an individual to transmit his or her SSN over the Internet, unless the connection is secure or the SSN is encrypted.
Require an individual to use his or her SSN to access an Internet Web site, unless a password or unique personal identification number or other authentication device is also required to access the Internet Web site. (Effective January 1, 2005)
Print an individualâ€™s SSN on any materials that are mailed to the individual, unless state or federal law requires the SSN to be on the document to be mailed. Notwithstanding this paragraph, SSNs may be included in applications and forms sent by mail, including documents sent as part of an application or enrollment process, or to establish, amend or terminate an account, contract or policy, or to confirm the accuracy of the SSN. An SSN that is permitted to be mailed under this section may not be printed, in whole or in part, on a postcard or other mailer not requiring an envelope, or visible on the envelope or without the envelope having been opened. (Effective January 1, 2005)
Encode or embed the SSN in or on a card or document, including, but not limited to, using a bar code, chip, magnetic strip, or other technology, in place of removing the SSN as an effort to comply with these new provisions.

Allowable Uses of the SSN
As a Requirement of Law or for Administrative Purposes: Social Security numbers may be
collected, used, or released as required by state or federal law,
or used for internal verification or administrative purposes.

It's illegal to obtain it and then pass it off as your own.

It is not illegal to ask for it. You are not legally required to provide your SSN to private businesses â€” including private health care providers and insurers â€” unless you are involved in a transaction in which the Internal Revenue Service requires notification. (MediCal and Medicare are government health plans and can require a Social Security number.) As for government agencies, some of them are allowed to require it (such as the DMV), but they must also provide you with information as to whether it is optional or required, how it's used, and under what statutory authority they are requiring it.
Employers require your SSN. While there is no law against it, they are discouraged against displaying it (on id cards, etc). In CA & NY, they cannot display the SSN due to recent laws.

ssn basically stores all your private information on you if you are asked for it you can ask why? and listen to their answer if it seems reasonable to you or not. I did that once and the answer i got was basically non informative, that is i didnt proceed after the question , ijust gave it. In hindsight i probably would have gone with my gut instinct and refused to give it. I do know that if u are to be employed it is a way for the employer to have the necessary info on you to prove that your a citizen of said country and get a paycheck. Otherwise i cannot pinpoint the exact whereabouts of the legal documentation as i am not privy to this kind of information either. Good luck!

I am going to a deposition or will be infront of a commissioner of the court to answer questions about a debt. do I have to give a social security number or whats my out on this question. I do not want to supply any of this info to anyone. if there is a law please point me in the right direction. mike
