Terrorism and death penalty?
Find answers to your legal question.

Terrorism and death penalty?

Why the hell are we not bringing back the death penalty for terrorists? If we start killing a few of them, at least it will bring some sort of justice.

I am all for internment of suspected terrorists indefinitely also - that is if our security services have sufficient evidence which may not be able to be used in court.

Makes me sick that we have given up our right to reintroduce the death penalty. It should be the right, and duty of the UK citizens so decide suitable punishment.

Death penalty is revenge and not justice. We can NOT judge their crimes by doing the same to them. Then we also will become terrorists. Death won't justify another death.
You want to kill all bad people? That's terrorist's talk.

We should not have a death penalty.
Why?

Well remember the Birmingham pub bombings?
The guy who did it got off.
Why?
The police lied and innocent people were jailed for the crime.
This fact was publicised world-wide and especially in the movie, 'In the Name of the Father'.

The police officers who lied? Nothing happened to them for their evil crime! Filth! They should hang!

This is English 'justice'.

And English people wonder why some Irish people hate them!

The death penalty for people who are prepared to die for their beliefs wouldn't be much of a deterrant.
If we were really serious about dealing with terrorists we could do worse than follow the Israeli example. When a suicide bomber blows himself up the Israeli army goes to his family home and flattens it to the ground.
If we did the same and deported all known family members of the bombers that might serve as a deterrant.

Mr Sceptic
Because our record of convicting people for terrorist offences is decidedly shaky.

The Guildford Four and the Birmingham Six would have hanged according to your thoughts - I suppose that would have stopped the campaign which proved them innocent.

Internment of suspected terrorists? So no trial, no putting evidence before a court and no worry about whether people are actually guilty.

Your desire for revenge and justice is understandable, but doesn't justice also demand that the right people are punished?

The pressure we put on the police and intelligence services to get answers to terrorist outrages means that they cut corners and are more concerned with charging someone, than they are with charging the RIGHT someone.

Mrs T knew how to deal with them.

Well, our system is rubbish anyway. There is so much red tape. Just be thankful that most successful terrorists manage to give themselves the death penalty. (Masquerading as martyrdom).
The death penalty would not help to deter someone who is hell bent on self destruction.

As most of the suicide bombers are already dead it would be a pointles excersise to hang them as well. Also most of the suicide bombers operating in Britain are British citizens so in theory they could be charged with treason for which the death penalty is still an option. To get rid of terrorism is a virtually impossible thing to do.The old saying of divide and rule still goes because you have a government(not just in Britain) but in most countries and media who are fueling the divide and driving a wedge further and further between diferent cultures and religions( read your newspapers every day)and this fuels further distrust between communities and further division it's a vicious circle and until the circle is broken then this problem will be with us until the end and judging by the way things are going now that won't be very long comming

No one really knows whats going on in Guantanamo Bay.

They could be getting some of the worst torture imaginable. You never know, but killing a few terrorists isn't going to be that effective, but at least we got Saddam right?

what people need to realise is that these extreme terrorist's have nothing else. they can do no good for anyone no matter what situation is handed to them .there whole life is to bring death thats why they can do suicide bombings.trying to reabilitate them will just not work the only way to realyl get rid of the problem is just that getting rid of the problem

I agree so let's start with the key terrorists:

Ex PM Anthony Blair, Still President George W. Bush, Lord Goldsmith, President Islam Karimov, President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, President Umar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, President Robert Mugabe, President Mahinda Rajapaksa, acting PM Thein Sein and (if he doesn't die of leukemia first) General Soe Win.

I know the list continues but will that do for starters?

The death penalty is wrong. You cannot justify murder with murder. Even terrorists deserve a fair trial. The death penalty is an offshoot of ancient barbaric customs- we have moved beyond that.
And what about those supposed terrorists who may be falsely accused? Anyone can use the death penalty to get away with murder if they hold a high seat in government. How do you know the people the government is executing are really guilty of the crime they are being hanged for?

James S
Apparently you haven't kept track of the American situation. How many Gitmo detainees have now been released and had no reason to be there in the first place. Don't get me wrong, there are threatening, violent, terrorists there, but not all of them. Also, with the advent of DNA, many death row inmates in America have been removed from the row, or even acquitted.

Should we sentence ourselves to death if we find that we executed an innocent individual?

Most of the time, I support the death penalty. Then, something comes along and demonstrates that I am wrong and I start to oppose the death penalty. Then, an individual comes along and commits a crime so heinous that no other penalty save death fits.

On this one, we suffer the human quandary of public ethics and morality. An American Supremem Court Justice once said it is better for 100 guilty men to walk free as to have 1 innocent man punished. I don't know if that is still true, or not, unless I am the innocent man being unjustly punished.

Jean-Luc
Oh dear. So what are you going to do in a few years when an out of control government labels YOU a terrorist because of "thought crime", locks you away on the "evidence" they,ve fabricated against you and passes the death sentence against you?

Stop ranting, start thinking.

Mc Taggart
The death penalty is the only sentence that works, as they don't come back for a second helping. What if we do have a few miscarriages, are we so short of bodies that we cant spare a few for the greater good.

Terrorism is a crime and killing innocent people is awful, death penalty is great for stopping crimes, when people start thinking that who ever kills a person is gonna be killed then killing will drop to the minimum.
I agree with executing those who kill innocent all over the world...

Dry Dreamer
The only way to deal with them is to shoot them on sight

and it shouldnt count for the illigal occupiers of iraq, palistine and northern ireland who have killed innocent people for the last 30 years? hypocracy at its best
