What woman? Every case is different. If you are talking about Andrea Yates, the jury and court determined that she was temporarily insane due to untreated post-partum depression. There was extensive evidence that she was delusional.

You think that a woman who now knows she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, and drowned her five children because of it, got off easy?! It is so gut wrenching for her to know this that the prison she is in keeps her drugged up so that she cannot realize what has happened. She has attempt suicide more than once I believe.

As for using contraception, she AND her husband belonged to a church that didn't allow it. She didn't want more kids and HE insisted. HE never helped with any of them, never changed a diaper and yet HE insisted that the children also be homeschooled--by her, of course.

HE is now remarried and living a happy little life, blaming his wife for all of it, as you are. HE takes no responsibility for what happened to HIS family.

How convenient it is for you to judge. Do you have children? Do you know what it takes? Have you ever even suffered clinical depression, let alone postpartum psychosis? Do you have any idea what that might be like?

I don't in any way condone what she did. I can't begin to imagine how horrible it was for those children, being chased around the house by a mother who wanted to kill them. I shudder to this day when I envision the struggle that took place in that bathtub as she held them down. But I don't think she was "ignorant" or the only participant in that family. She was sick and now she has to live everyday, either so out of it she can't think, or with the knowledge that she murdered the very babies she gave birth to and loved with all her being. Have a little compassion and hope that you never have to go through even a little of what led her to that despicable act.

She was mentally ill. As such, she should not get the death penalty. A mentally ill man would not have gotten the death penalty either.

That poor woman. Andrea Yates suffered terribly from post-partum depression after each child. But her husband was horribly controlling and insisted that she have more & more children. Then he expected her to home-school them and care for them when she could barely care for herself.

This was a prime example of Spousal Abuse by the husband. And those beautiful children paid the ultimate price for his hubris.

Addition: You people are horrible. You have just set the mental health profession back to the stone ages. Where were all of you when that woman cried out for help but none came? And how can you let the father off scott-free for his complete disregard for the mental health of his wife and the safety of his children? You are as sick as she was. I guess to your way of thinking, all of you should be executed as well.

I assume you mean Andrea Yates? She'd be put to death if she were a man, because then "he" couldn't be suffering from postpartum depression. Psychosis and depression (both of which Andrea was diagnosed with) are very different from the typical sociopathic behavior exhibited by cold-blooded murderers. Being psychotic got her off "easy," as you so carelessly put it.

Andrea had little to no control over what she did to her children. She could have done a lot of things differently, yes, but she also wasn't able to make sound decisions for herself. Part of the blame goes to her family for allowing her suffering to continue.

Funny that you think that not putting someone mentally unstable to death is a lack of justice. Do you think mentally retarded people should get the death penalty?

this is so tragic but she had to be mentally ill to be able to do it FIVE times, as this goes against nature unless something is drastically wrong mentally.

i ask, where are the children' father/s and theextended family, could they not see a woman on the edge. it is a very complicated situation that the children paid for and that is so tragic.

She believed that the devil was in them and after putting them in the scalding bath water she drowned them to 'save them from the Devil's hands'. She felt she was doing something right. If you are that psychotic that you believe the Devil has possessed your children and even after you've begun to murder them, you feel nothing but satisfaction something is wrong with you. But I think her punishment would mean so much more if she were to rot in jail and reflect on the horrible things she's done to her children. She had some custody issues with her husband after she tried to kill the first two and I believe that she was judged to be legally insane and in some states you can't put an insane person to death. I don't believe that killing her will make us any better than she is.

She was obviously sick. She should not be condemned to death, in my opinion nobody has that right. If anything she should be placed in an institution. Very sad story in an case

She was found to have mental health issues. Our Justice system makes provisions for the mentally ill. Being a woman has nothing to do with it. A man with mental illness committing a crime has those same provisions. She should not get the death penalty. There is no justice in killing a mental ill person.

the problem is people with mental problems dont have them diagnosed until after something bad happens most go through life thinking they are OK when they really are not. post par tum depression is a terrible thing read up on it to try and understand what it is capable of making people do to there children she has a serious illness. i dont condone what she did . but putting her to death will not bring the children back or serve any purpose than making the moral majority feel better

obviously she was nuts. I think if your found to be nuts litterally they can not put her to death which makes sense. she should get help and be put away forever where they can help her

They found her mentally ill, that is why she didnt get the death panalty. I agree with the birth control part. I also agree with, if it would've been a man he probably would of had it worse.

absoutly! I think they should drown her. hold her head under water while she gasps for air just like those poor kids had to do. Let her see the pain she put them through. Our country has gone as far as to say that bacially everyone is mental. They will find an excuse to call them insain. I am sick of it! If this country would stick to ethics and law and quit calling everybody that kills someone mental or disturbed then our tax money could go to a lot more than the upkeep of inmates!! Everytime you see a murder sucided on tv what the main cause ... Oh they were disturbed! yea you dang right they were they are crazy to do it but that shouldn't be an excuse to put them in a nut house for a couple of years then let them off the hook!!! And being a woman shouldn't be any less punishment that a man. She took those poor little kids into the bathroom and drown them one by one. Imagine those poor little kids whatching their brother/sister being killed and knowing they was next. God i dont even want to think about it!

As you imply, even in murder there is a scale to be followed. If someone robs a bank and kills a police officer in a subsequent gun battle, as horrible as that is, I give it a ONE on the ONE to TEN scale. This is taking into account the killer's diagnosis -- psychotic, paranoid sociopath. In other words he was mentally ill.

What THAT WOMAN did was so horrific that I'm not going to mention it, except to say that her actions are rated TEN on the scale. This is taking into account her diagnosis -- postpartum depression. So she was mentally ill too.

So one could make the argument that ALL murderers are mentally ill and need TREATMENT. OR one could make the argument that only SOME murderers are mentally ill. I PERSONALLY MAKE THE ARGUMENT THAT THE STATE OF MIND OF A MURDERER IS IRRELEVANT. I ALSO ARGUE THAT WHERE THEY FALL ON A ONE TO TEN SCALE MATTERS NOT.

If found guilty of murder, all of these people need to be rather swiftly put to death. In my opinion they should face a firing squad.

Put her down. she should definately get the death penalty. Her mental health is irrelevant. She murdered her children. Even if she did it because she's crazy, she still did it. So do we let her live just because she's crazy, living out the rest of her crazy days in a prison at taxpayers expense? Nah, put her to death.
