Why does the US govt. only make a half hearted effort to stop illegal drug trade

As long as potheads, junkies and left wing sympathizers keep voting for candidates who are more interested with treating drugs like a 'disease' instead of a crime, well, nothing will change.
Personally, I think the US should seize drug shipments, then poison it, then reintroduce it back onto the streets. Once junkies start dropping like flies, you might see a drop in usage.
People should put half as much effort into stopping drugs as the do stopping tobacco. |

They haven't because they don't have the resources. Well they do, but if they used all of the resources to stop the illegal drug trade, then little would be left to fund or support other programs (including subsidies for local governments to stop drug trafficing or terrorism). |

It would tie up too many resources, and the issue isn't as high of a priority as many others. |

There isn't a country in the world with the money, manpower or resources to "stop" the illegal drug trade. If the US would consider legislation to legalize marijuana, tax it, and make the penalties for commiting a crime under the influence of it similar to alcohol laws, we could probably get a pretty even foothold on the problem of "hardcore" drugs like crack, cocaine, heroine, etc. But unfortunately our legislators haven't woken up yet to the fact that Marijuana is less dangerous than smoking and alcohol. If we continue teaching the youth of this country that Marijuana and Cocaine are the same type of drug because they are both "bad", our nations drug problem is going to get much worse rather than better. Person A tries marijuana, sees its no big deal, and thinks "Hey! They lied to me about pot! I bet coke and heroin aren't as bad as they say, too!". It's a vicious cycle. |

I personally don't think that the government DOES have the resources to stop illegal drug trade. The government is too busy using our resources for stupid crap. Look at all the money that they are sending to all these foreign countries, and cutting all of OUR programs in THIS country to do it! They are HURTING THEIR OWN people in every sense of the word, to prove how almighty we are!! Where is hurting their own people getting them? HATRED against our own government, because they can't seem to be able to keep OUR resources in OUR OWN COUNTRY where they are suppose to be to be able to do what they need to, to protect this country, and help it's own people!! Enough said!!! |

The government does make efforts. However, most of the cartels that come through border patrol pay the officers more than the government does. So, the border patrol keeps their mouths shut. Also, cartels have a tendency to kill those who get in their way. In the way of domestic drugs and trafficking, there are more addicts and creators than there are officers due to the lack of funds that police forces have. As far as people getting caught and tried for drug possession and trafficking, they have to be caught doing something. Like last year, a guy was arrested because he was trying to push his mobile home back up hill. The mobile home was on flat land on bricks. The drugs had him hallucinating that the home was rolling away. Not all users are that in your face so it makes them harder to catch. And, with the end of profiling and stereotyping due to the outcries of the public, the cops can't pull over every red car or every American going to Mexico or vice versa. |

I disagree. The US does NOT have the resources that it would take to stop illegal drugs. We don't have the manpower, we don't have the money, we don't have the equipment, and most of all we don't have the cooperation of the governments in which the drug trade originates.
I really don't think you have a clear idea of just how immense this problem is, and how complicated the solution is. There are only two ways to shut down the flow of illegal drugs: completely seal off the borders and search anything and everything entering the country, or shut down production at the source.
Sealing the borders won't work for obvious reasons, and shutting down production at the source won't work because of the lack of the aforementioned cooperation by foreign governments. |

The only way to stop illegal drug traffic is to eradicate the consumers, then there wouldn't be a market. The US government is not prepared to take that drastic action. As long as there is demand the market will remain. |

The DEA can't stop drug trafficking, in doing so they would put themselves out of work. So they slow the tide enough to have it look like they are trying without screwing themselves in the process. |

Because they directly profit from and control the drug trade all over the world. Why do you think poppy production is at an all time high in Afghanistan because heroin is one of the staples of their cults that all the leaders are involved it. Until the criminal families like the Rockefellers, Rothchilds, Bush's, and the many others that control the government are put in jail then drugs will only get worse. Washington needs a purging. There is so much filth that its destroying the country. |

Because drug money is the life-blood of the US economy. If it wasn't for the billions of dollars the US makes off of drug money the stock market and our overall economy would collapse. I'm not a conspirator, just a realist. |
