ok call the police maybe or try to get hold of the familys relatives?

THINKING
At common law, Burglery was defined as someone intentionaly breaking into a house at night for the purpose of stealing. Today, it does not have to be at night and the term house has been extended to mean any living accomodation, such as a mobile home or a boat. You have to have the intention to steal. Foe instance, if you break into an apartment to gain access to a store under it, you have not "burglerized" the apartment becuase your intent was to steal from the store. However, there are laws against trespassing.

Yes, you'd be in trouble. Depending on state law and the owner's personal preferencesyou may be dead. Knock on the door politely, and let the owner know. If the owner is not there leave a note on their door letting them know what happened and call the police.

I've spent a few years in law enforcement so perhaps I might help.

If you own the property (house) you have nothing to worry about.

If you rent the property and are worried that the cat might be in some kind of danger no one is going to throw you in jail for entering your own rental property. You will be legally responsible to the rightful owner and / or landlord for any damage you cause to the property while entering the house: A busted lock, a broken window, a busted door jam, etc.

My suggestion is that you pick the way to enter that causes the least amount of damage that you'll have to pay for. This is usually a small window pain in the rear kitchen door.

However, there are always local locksmiths who will come to your rented house and pick the lock for you legally and without damage to the property. Or, call your landlord first. Your landlord is supposed to have backup copies of your keys.

If you call the local police they will tell you the same thing.

Hope this helps.

If you don't provide food for your cat you may be prosecuted
get the police to assist you to gain entry and release your cat you have the duty of care

it depends on how you break in. and if there is an alarm. i would rather someone open my window and get in my house get the cat out and leave. than i would the cat tearing up the house using the bathroom in the floor and stuff

Feed and water the cat through any way available. When the owner gets back they will just have to deal with the cat crap and piss and uneaten food instead of the dead cat. I had to do this with Rumsfield once, I accidently locked him in the cabinet room and we couldn't remember where the keys were.

if the cats not on fire or starved for days then you will go to jail for band e or criminal trespassing but heres an idea try finding the landlord or someone with a key or ask the person to come open the door as long as you tell the land lord or ask for the keye yoou could ask a relative of the person but try a normal thing first and or call a locksmith that you are locked out and need the lock picked say the cats alone and you will pay for acess ot your apartment and the keys are in your purse inside and then find the purse inside and the cat dont let on you dont live in the place as he wont do it but this way you can be in and out for 50 and no charges if you dont take anything but the cat

If you break in you will get in trouble , no matter what you own inside . Assuming that you are not talking of getting in your own place.

Badkitty
Call the police, they will help you get the animal out. You may be asking for big trouble by breaking in.

the propertys not yours?

then call the police (not on 999, use there local number) and ask tehm to go in for you. if nothing eles you have informed them befor the fact so you cant be suspected of stealing.

Calamity Jane
call catwoman

is it a home or a garden shed or a garage.

better call the police just incase you get into trouble. if they can't find a keyholder they'll get a locksmith to open the property and then make it safe again.

I'd call the police and ask them what you should do.

It is best not to break in to someone elses house even if your cat is locked in there. Try putting some cat biscuits through the letter box and maybe a cloth soaked in water if you are worried about your cat going hungry overnight, then in the morning ring the local RSPCA for advice. They may be able to work with the local police to help get your cat back and will advise you on how best to keep it fed and watered until you can be reunited. Good luck!

I am very sure the RSPCA would back you up on a case of a cat suffering. Go to RSPCA.org. I don't fully understand your position but commend your principles & standards.
