Yes, the USA can do it...and what has it achieved over there?
HAs it reduced crime? No
Does iot save them money? No, it costs more to execute someone with all the appeals and legalities than it does to put someone in priso for the rest of their life
Will it make vengeful people feel better? Yes, but society shouldn't act on a minorities venegful feelings. |

Maxx - time after time you quote statistics (or summarize them) without producing any source. And time after time the most cursory check proves you to be utterly wrong.
Here we have another instance.
" I am an American and I live in Texas and Oklahoma. These states have the highest per capita rate of executions in the country. I believe that is one of the reasons that despite the relative poverty in this region we have a relatively low violent crime rate"
The reality is that Texas has the 15th highest murder rate and 13th highest violent crime rate. Oklahoma ranks 22nd for murder and 15th for violent crime.
There is absolutely no correlation between murder rates or violent crime rates and death penalty usage. Quite the opposite in fact. |

nonce's terrorists and child killers should be executed the government however will not do this .so it is time for a new system of democracy every thing put up for public vote. this will not happen either as the government will lose its power they give us what they think we need not what we want if we were in control then England will be a better place |

Im sure they arent all that bad a people. rage can overcome you sometimes. Wheres the sense in killing to make a statement that killing is wrong
no one is as bad as their worst act anyway.
killing is inhumane and makes us no better |

Cos that wouldn't send conflicting messages of State Sanction Murder is "okay" but all other murder is "evil"
Ghandi once said, "An eye for and eye will make the whole world go blind!", I think he was onto something there.
Don't get me wrong, I want criminals (regardless of the crime) to be punished, but I don't agree with Capitial or Corporal Punishment! |

Sadly crime the the USA is endemic, the death penalty is not a deterrent and miscarriages of justice are not unheard of, the argument is that it is better to let nine guilty people go free than wrongly convict one person.
Anyone convicted of a crime should be put under anaesthetic and have the name of the worst crime they have been convicted of branded on their foreheads, (in the case of 'murder' the state should use its common sense, cop killers could be branded as a 'paedo' for example) this is in addition to the jail term handed down by the judge.
'What are you in for?'
'I'm innocent.'
'Take your hat off!'
'Ow!' |

Take a better look at the United States experience with the death penalty. The death penalty has not been effective in preventing or reducing crime and it risks executing innocent people. Specifically (sources below)
In the USA, its not an effective way to prevent or reduce crime and it risks executions of innocent people. Here is some of what we know about the system and a viable alternative, with sources listed below.
Risks of executing innocent people-
124 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence. DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides and isn’t a guarantee we won’t execute innocent people.
The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in states that don’t.
We have a good alternative. Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.
Death penalty costs. The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, mostly because of the legal process. When the death penalty is a possible sentence, extra costs start mounting up before trial, continue through the uniquely complicated trial in death penalty cases (actually 2 separate stages, one to decide if the defendant is guilty and the second to choose the sentence, mandated by the Supreme Court), and appeals.
The death penalty doesn't apply to people with money. Its not reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed?
The death penalty doesn't necessarily help families of murder victims. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.
Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person. |

At least you don't get repeat offenders.
I can't say whether or not the McCanns are guilty of killing their child. I do know that it is unlikely they will do it again.
Some criminal acts can be categorised to fit the bill for capital punishment. Especially those criminals who's disposition would lead judges to believe they would commit further similar crimes if and when they were released from prison. In these cases, in order to protect the public, capital punishment could be the only way the legal system could 100% guarantee that the criminal would not repeat his actions.
Like many people say, Capital punishment cannot be used as a deterrent. The US is a prime example of how this does not work. The biggest problem is the absolute necessity of proving guilt beyond any doubt. Not just reasonable doubt.
Too many people are still unjustifiably imprisoned in the UK. |

Yawn. No, capital punishment is not a deterrent. Fear of getting caught is a deterrent |

You haven't really thought about this at all really. Just because they do it in the US is no reason to import it here, and the murder rate in America has hardly shrunk has it? |

Capital punishment: doesn't work in America and it certainly wouldn't work in the UK. |

In the world where they have capital punishment the numbers of crimes has not dropped, so really it does not work. |

I am an American and I live in Texas and Oklahoma. These states have the highest per capita rate of executions in the country. I believe that is one of the reasons that despite the relative poverty in this region we have a relatively low violent crime rate.
The death penalty is the best deterrent there is. Tim McVeigh the man who blew up the Murray Building in Oklahoma City (a few minutes from my house) was executed. He will blow up no more buildings. Tookie Williams; a celebrity favorite, will not get the chance to shoot another hotel clerk in the face because he is dead. Talk about a great deterrent.
Then you have to remember; even if you put people in prison for life, they can escape. I happened to be diving through Huntsville Texas when a store clerk informed me that 2 death row inmates had escaped.
Plus why should a car thief or pot dealer have to share a cell with a guy who buried a little girl alive after raping her. Why should low paid guards have to put up with them.
The violent crime rate in the USA is lower than in Europe despite the propaganda that you have heard. The UK rate keeps going up and up. They have taken away all of the opportunity you have to defend yourself and combined it with coddling the criminals.
The USA learned its lesson and decided to get tough on criminals, I hope that my friends in the UK can do the same. |

We should bring back capital punishment simply because the prisons are getting too full but there should be definate proof of guilt and no reason for doubt. |
